.tv Geo .tv domains, "The emporer has no clothes."

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
The curtain has been pulled and I think the bidding on the geo's will come as a surprise to some today,

Japan.tv $10,099
Germany.tv $10,099

I thought there would be some level of support still existing in the market but people voted with their wallets today. After 4 years of failed development attempts by domainers and hundreds of thousands in wasted reg fees people have come back to reality on these names.

I think it is pretty apparent that alot of the prior geo sales (even recent ones) that some have grossly overestimated the market.

I've been saying for a while that the geo's .tv's are not the gold standard, they are mostly "trophy names", typically somewhat vague names that are very hard and costly to develop. Even still two sold today are far better targeted than most. Obviously transactions like Italy.tv and California.tv are looking pretty poor today in comparison.

You're very welcome, I thought it was common knowledge btw.

You can just change the tld in the end of the url to see any extensions' top developed sites.

Geo.tv is probably a better bet to develop than even geo.cctld, the issue would be getting regular multimedia content w/o breaking the bank, I doubt that this cost could be covered by ad $$$ alone.

Amongst builders and developers, it's standard.

Amongst "domainers", stuff like that is akin to going into a tribe of primitive natives and convincing them you're a god of fire by lighting a matchstick.

"Oooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" :o:o:o:o

:hehe:

Yeah, Dongsman, I raise both hands at my ignorance. It's funny, though, as I can NEVER seem to stop learning!

Goin' a little overboard, there. I've always stayed away from Alexa, years ago I thought they were a bit invasive, privacy-wise.

What dongsdude failz to relize is that we all; have information that has been brought back to us; from the future.. and that info leadz people from the early 21 century like myself and otherz like me to stay the course..It kinda kin to insider trading; but the information was forced upon me in order to make sure the future becomez that what it is supose to be..its a weird time continiueum kinda thingz thatz really difficult to wrape your brain around unless u focus real hard ..

It was a light-hearted joke and not intended as a barb, however I can understand if people might've taken it the wrong way, given the earlier conversations in this thread :hehe:

.tv has the WhiteBark seal of approval - that's all that is needed...

Seriously though, for a cctld it has a great upside especially now that they have moved from the silly premium pricing.

Yeah, I think there's some real potential there too.
I'm always open to being wrong, but I think that people who are too fast to dismiss the internet/TV interplay (or, who assign it at a point too far down the road) are off. My own pretty standard guess is that the shape of the internet and television, circa 2020, will be a hybrid of the two with tons of streaming video content. Unless the way we navigate really shifts to something totally unexpected, it makes sense that providers may want to use certain .tv names to distinguish their content models.

When a guy in his living room, in his underwear, watching a sitcom (or whatever media content) is furnished with a tightly targeted commercial right on his TV set- and if he's interested, he just points and clicks his way to "more information" with his remote control- and the content provider gets an affiliate commission if he actually acts/buys- that's pretty exciting stuff.

...nor should we neglect the complete mobility of the coming internet. It may very well be that the iPad is but a simple prototype of what is to come by, what you say, the year 2020.

It's a trip trying to figure this all out and I for one am looking forward to the challenge. The internet is not the same internet of 2000 and will never be the same as the one we are experiencing in 2010. It just doesn't move that slow...I'm just trying to keep up, not get ahead although I would like to.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Welcome to .TV Dong.

Wow, you pretty much condensed our development model for media dot tv into two paragraphs. Thanks. :)

I see it by 2015 btw, at least stateside, in my neck of the woods probably 2020 is correct.

That's probably because tv.com is not really an extension.

Doesn't show any results for co.uk either, just uk

Alexa is far from perfect, but its a nice enough indicator.

Top 1000 Alexa rankings within .TV

This list proves to me that crap names can still rank. Hatred for the hyphen is overrated. Generally short names are often up there (usually owned by more connected/knowledgable domainers/users I imagine).

And with Liverpoolfc.tv and some of the names that .TV is more universally accepted than people think (i.e. there are many foreign languages on this ext than people maybe realize).

What is also interesting is that the 999th ranked site has only existed for UNDER a year. Either there's going to be a seismic shift in usage and a shake up of this Top 1000 or things will die slowly. It seems almost pathetic that something that new can rank that highly - of course trend shaping on the internet is phenomenally quick and maybe I don't appreciate it well enough.

Oh...and porn sells in ANY extension

Tv.com is the world's 739:th largest site.

Thanks for providing the link Samit.
