While moderating the opening session at DomainFest this morning Frank Schilling mentioned in passing that since July 2010 his company Name Administration sold just about $7 Million dollars in domain names “without trying too hard”.

The $7 Million dollars was generated from the sale of approximately 250 domains

He has 6-10 million a year in reg fees alone.

Seems to be confusion about what was actually said.

He has 6-10 million a year in reg fees alone.

I don't think this is accurate.

Domaintools shows that he owns 243,827 domains. His renewal fees would not be that high (6-10million). Not all domains need to renewed each year.

Plus, he has his own registrar, so the prices are lower than what we pay for our domains.

I find his list of names/inquiries amazing. I would not have even registered a very large proportion of them let alone expect to get offers.

Proves I have learned nothing in my few years in this business.

Exactly what I thought when I saw those lists.

It's hard to learn something in this business when at least some of the information we get from the "big players" is nothing but BS. It's hard to separate the truth from the BS, because documentation of claims is lacking many times. I would be skeptical of any claims of sales in this market without documentation. Remember, we've been sold a load of crap and lies from "respectable" individuals and companies in the past, and those facts have been documented.

So more like $1 million - $3 million in renewals?

With his renewals in mind, does he make any REAL profit?

250 domains for 7 million equals to $28.000 per domain.

If he has 300.000 domains and sold only 250, he sold 1 domain in every 1200. 1200*7.25 is $8700 which is %31 of the income.

If you pay %31 of your domain income to renewal fees I would say the future doesn't look very good for you. With time the domains that have demand will drop in ratio to your portfolio. You will end up making less and less sales and the renewal percentage will grow to %40 and %50 of your sales income. Eventually you will end up with tons of useless domains that you have to drop.

I have a small portfolio of 200 domains and I pay %9 of the sales income to renewals. I spend %50 for new purchases.

BUT you forget what he makes on PPC, web development, etc which there is no real way to guestimate.

Those definitely have to be taken into account. If the numbers are correct, his domains combined receive an average of 150,000,000 uv per month (I don't remember the source).

Just about to say that too. He's worth millions but he's not making stinking rich money. $7 million sounds like a lot but when you start to take into account the machine you need to make that and your expenses then it's not that much in pure profit. He makes a great living and probably has amazing assets.

The fact he paid zero taxes tells me he made zero profit. Yes you can shuffle money around the correct way to shelter all you can but you should have to pay something if you profit. No matter how little.

Normal rich man tax bracket is about 15-20% after all the sheltering.

If he is a registrar would he not be paying 18 cents to register a domain? so about $50,000 to re-register all his domains? If hes made 7 million that seems like a good return

he makes revenue on his domains besides selling them.

As far as I know there is a certain wholesale cost any registrar pays to a registry for domains.

The wholesale cost of a .COM is $7.34 as far as I known. Owning your own registrar does not avoid this.
