Fake GoDaddy Transfer email

SpaceshipSpaceship
Watch
I just got an email from godaddy asking to confirm that I'd like to transfer my domain aorm.net (yeah not my best domain, so not a big deal here heh) to godaddy, it's currently at fabulous.
But I never initiated any transfers for that domain, especially into godaddy for that domain.
It had a Transaction ID and Security Code and all looks 100% legit from godaddy.

So I'm thinking that godaddy now allows to request a transfer and this is the new way to stealing domains? Anyone else got similar request?

Anyone can request a transfer, I could go to godaddy and order a .com transfer for namepros.com if I wanted to pay for it. It would be a waste, but I could do it.

It's possible someone just typod a domain name they intended to transfer.

I've received a several dozen of those "error" emails over the years.

Yes but you usually need the auth code to request a transfer and it can only be acquired from the current registrar, so how did they get it?

When Godaddy is the gaining registrar in a domain transfer the Transaction ID and Security Code entry step precedes the Auth Code entry step.

I never actually transfered any names to godaddy, only out of it :hehe:

if domain locking is available on fabulous you must lock your domains and inform fabulous.com support about unauthorized transfer

I would be interested in seeing the header from that email. Sounds pretty scamish to me. Feel free to forward the email Michael (jamie @ yofie.com).

Transfer won't go through, as long as you don't forward the e-mail to the person who initiated the transfer, and give that person your EPP code for that domain name.

Anyone can initiated transfer from godaddy, but eventually you need the EPP code, and Transaction ID+Security Code.
Godaddy will send the Transaction ID+Security Code to domain name Registrant and Administrative e-mail address.
