Hi all!

We’ve created this thread to make it easier to communicate with us here on Namepros, and we’ll also be posting regular updates on our offers and products. Please feel free to share any feedback and suggestions with us, or to let us know if there’s anything we can assist with.

We’d like to kick things off with an extension of our $7.99 .COM transfer sale, the code “COMTRANS4” has been extended until 23:59 PST on May 31, and there’s no limit on how many domains you can transfer using the code. Every month we have great prices on a wide selection of domains, and you can find a full list of our sales here:

https://www.dynadot.com/sales.html

We’re also excited to share that our CEO, Todd Han, will be hosting an AMA (Ask Me Anything) right here on Namepros in the near future, with more information on a date and time coming soon.

Dynadot is an ICANN accredited domain name registrar and web host headquartered in San Mateo, California. The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Was wondering the same. This isn't common practice and under GDPR this is considered sensitive personal data.

There's an option to pick organization too but it's a bit unclear to me what documents you need to provide there.
I can understand them targeting new account, or some of those offshore clients buying and sell tons of domains thru their markets, why they singling out aged domainer accounts with little to none marketplace usage, these woukd be deemed low risk, especially if they are not pulling any funds off the platform, simply renewing domains?

Every vendor always says we will safeguard your data , then 2 years later you get that dreaded email that our systems were accessed by outside parties and your data might have been compromised. Would appreciate a rep response to what’s going on here.

Never seen a domain company ask for kyc unless you do crypto payout or something ? Seems a bit far fetched , what is reasoning for this?

I had to do this a few years back in order to unlock my account, very reluctantly complied and no problems since. But I still dread ever having to do it again.

That makes sense, a warranted reason for doing so. Just out of the blue to non problem accounts that are not withdrawing or active in marketplace purchase, or sales kind of odd. To many companies have messed up people's data, and their should be consequences other than some crappy credit monitoring promo for a few months. They start with a few, and soon it becomes ALL.

KYC is required for a lot of cctlds, especially European. If, for example, you have any .de domains in your account then KYC is mandatory.

Maybe, but the entity asking for KYC should clearly state the reason and not leave their customers in the dark.

I'm not defending the approach, I'm just trying to explain the possible reasons behind why a registrar might ask for a KYC.
In my case, the reason has always been some cctld registry asking for sensitive info they should never have been allowed to have at hand and thus forcing registrars to ask for that.

I get your point.

Something strange happened at Dynadot. I just hand registered a .com there. The domain was registered to me and placed in my account with nameservers updated correctly, but the Whois says that the registrar is Nominet (HK) Limited...

@Caleb Tweed Can you explain this?

@Embrand ,
If that was via a coupon then that's the reason. It seems some coupon registrations get registered with Dynadot's partners and not with Dynadot.

Thanks. Yes, I used a coupon and I just saw that Dynadot actually does explain this in their coupon terms:

"Once registered, your domain will appear in your Manage Domains summary just like any other domain in your account. During the first year, your domain is technically registered at our partner registrar, so the one thing you'll notice is that the public WHOIS record will display our partner registrar instead of Dynadot. This is completely normal and simply a result of how the promotion is structured. If you renew, the domain will transfer to Dynadot and function as a standard registration going forward."

This is why

"We’re introducing a new Know Your Customer (KYC) process to verify registrant identity for domain extensions that require it.

KYC requirements are set by certain domain registries. Initially, they will apply to .DE and .NO domains, with additional extensions potentially added in the future."

@Dynadot

1) Why do you need to send 35 separate emails in one day all with the exact same message for each domain respectively?

2) Why do you require a whole new verification every 6 months just to keep a name on your marketplace?

Hi,

Your unverified listing for ... from another registrar has been automatically removed from the marketplace because the 6-month validity period has expired. To relist this domain, you may contact your account manager, or you can verify domain ownership yourself and relist it independently under the "Other Registrar" tab.

All the best,
Dynadot

Yep. They are obviously getting their ducks in a row regarding KYC requirements (note that I don't hold domains in either extension, so they seem to be sending notification to everyone):

What this means for you

If KYC is required for your domain, you’ll need to verify the associated Contact Record before completing certain actions, such as registrations, transfers, and domain pushes.

Until verification is complete, these actions will not be available. You can learn more about KYC requirements and when verification is needed in our Help Center.

How to complete KYC verification

To get started, log in to your Dynadot account and go to My Domains → TLD Settings → Contact KYC.
Select the Contact Record you want to verify and follow the steps provided.

For more details, see how to complete KYC verification.

All the best,
Dynadot

35 separate emails
Obviously they send one per domain. This has long been an annoyance of mine with certain registrars when it comes to the annual WhoIs notification. I prefer a consolidated email. But then you also get plenty of people who miss a domain notification when it comes to renewals or something, they lose the domain and blame the registrar saying they should have sent separate emails.

I think generally people who know how to manage their domains reliably prefer a consolidated email, but people who aren't so good at that, and rely on emails to prompt them, probably need the individual emails. The registrar can't really win either way (you can't keep all the people happy all the time).

Okay thanks, always good to hear the other side.

The conundrum can be fixed in the notification settings, offering a choice.

@Caleb Tweed ,

I got an email today and why is Dynadot suddenly requiring KYC ?I dont trust handling my sensitive information .

Do you plan to sell all data collected from customers ?
I agree, especially at a time when 150+ million US and Canadian driver's licenses are available for anyone to obtain.

History has shown that these third-party "verification" services cant seem to keep the data it ingests secure.

The FBI is investigating a recent hack that put more than 170 million U.S. and Canadian driver’s license scans for sale online.

While the scans can’t easily become physical licenses, former director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Chris Krebs says…

Hi, just wanted to chime in here about the new KYC. This is specifically if your account has any .DE or .NO domains currently in your Dynadot account, so not all users will be requested to have this, the notification is just sent to all just in case you plan to register either of those extensions. We are being requested by the Registry to complete this verification of our users for these two for now, but other ccTLDs might be added to the requirement down the road if the Registry requests us to get KYC (but a single KYC will cover for all current and future names unless a Registry asks for something hyper-specific).
