DomainTools, the leader in domain name research and monitoring, today announced free APIs that will give users easier access to the deep data available via DomainTools.com and Screenshots.com.

Developer API access is currently being offered by DomainTools at no cost, which is a great incentive for developers looking to easily test and integrate DomainTools’ API services. The developer API access, which includes 500 domain profile queries and 500 Whois lookups per month, allows users to tap into DomainTools’ complete database of Whois information and exclusive Domain Profile data in their own development environment before committing to Professional API access. By upgrading to Professional API access, users can gain limitless access to all of DomainTools’ API products.

In addition, any user can access DomainTools’ deep database of screenshot images via the Screenshots.com API. This release, which offers current and historic images in multiple sizes, is being made available free of charge for a limited time. The thumbnail images on the DomainTools Whois pages have always been a very popular content area of our site and we are pleased to make this unique set of homepage images available to our user base in API form.

Both companies and individual professionals use DomainTools’ API, including security personnel, network engineers, brand protection agencies, IP investigators and investors.

“We use the DomainTools API for log processing and other tasks. Specifically, when parsing logs, we sometimes want to see who is hitting us (especially if there is any kind of unusual frequency). We also use it to check our domain status and the status of any domains that we bring up,” says Kris Bushover, IT Director, Spiceworks.

DomainTools’ API data is organized in an intuitive URL structure, usually centered around a domain name. Data is offered in XML, JSON, and HTML response formats, which allows DomainTools’ API consumers to:

•Discover relationships among websites, domain owners and IP addresses with Name Server, Reverse IP and Reverse Whois APIs.

•Retrieve a domain’s history with Whois History and Hosting History API.

•Monitor keywords and ownership profiles in global domain name registrations every day with Trademark and Registrant Alert APIs.

•Uncover valuable domains for registration by leveraging Domain Search and Domain Suggestions APIs.

•Capture a website’s visual history with the Screenshots API.

DomainTools has a long legacy of building scalable, high-performance APIs built on open-source technology that embraces modern protocols and response formats. DomainTools’ APIs can be accessed via http://www.domaintools.com/api/.

“DomainTools has built upon our commitment to public APIs over several iterations, each time with progressively more data, culminating in 2011 when we launched a new RESTful API that offered access to the data behind nearly all DomainTools products. And now in 2012, we are pleased to introduce a first set of free APIs,” says Tim Chen, CEO, DomainTools.
