Domain Lock?

Is it safe to transfer domains or can another registrar hijack them when they're unlocked for transfer? Sorry if this question is a little dumb but I'd really like to know.

I would not leave them unlocked for too long. As soon as transfer is finished then lock them. I don't think anyone can hijack them when they are in transfer mode. Godaddy make quick transfers out and other registers should too.

I'm a little paranoid transferring an important domain. The transfer is taking a little longer than I expected so I hope I don't have to leave it unlocked for up to five days.
