If you are looking for names to register, and the majority of exts. are already regged, does this affect the value? To me it shows demand for a particular word or phrase. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't really say it effects value, it is more symptom of potential value. Many wealthy people own Mercedes though I wouldn't say buying the car has a positive effect on their wealth.

If its a highly sought after name or keyword then I would say no it does not effect the value.

If it is a highly sought after keyword or name like you say then wouldnt people go after it if it was on auction? Thus driving the value up.

One would think but it just depends on the keyword or name.

The shorter the better in my opinion.

Agreed -- although perception does still play a large role in value, especially in the aftermarket.

One thing I look at is not so much how many other extensions are registered, but how many other extensions are actually developed. Having a developed domain means that domain is less likely to be sold--pinching the market supply for the rest of the domains with that keyword.

Some times people register all other extensions even for ordinary domains in order to protect their website, at other times domainers effect each others actions, for example you register an average domain because you see all other extensions are taken, then after a year you realize that it was not a very good domain and you decide to drop it, next another domainer notices that domain again and decides to register it because other extensions are taken, the cycle keeps going on as different domainers keep dropping the same domain in different extensions and other domainers keep registering them because at any given time only one of the extensions might show to be available. It seems that the real good generic domains are also taken in most of the major TLDs in addition to the usual extensions , if you do a search for www.domainname (without spaces) it might show some of those extensions. You can add -.ext to your search if the results are overwhelmed by one ext. , for example do a search for ( www.book -.com ) or ( www.car -.com ) to see the scope of those domains in different extensions. IMO
