How Does Page Rank Affect Value?

I'm curious as to how Page Rank affects value... my brother owns a popular site with a PR6 ranking... the site is arguably the second most popular site of it's kind. The domain name is the second most used term to describe a popular outdoor sport (tho it was a made-up term at the time, many now use it interchangably to refer to the sport).

Obviously, his site is not for sale.. but how does page rank affect the value of a site in terms of advertising or domain value? Is it a selling point to advertisers, for example?

How would links in a signature in his forum (for example) affect the linking site's PR if at all?

BTW- his Alexa is 815,000.. pretty good, I'd say.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

PR supposedly has no effect on serps but I think it lets visitors know that the website is at least some what established and considered "useful" by Google. Some people will pay to have their website listed on PR6+ sites.

Which site do you mean when you say, "linking's site"?
If you mean your brothers, then I am almost sure that it will add to the PR score. But will be less effective if the website is not related to the forum.

Thanks. I was wondering about that... but I actually meant, does it boost my unrelated site's PR if I list them in my sig on a PR6 or 7 site?

You need it in more than just one site to be effective; but theorhetically... yes.

Essentially it's "google bombing", which still works despite Google's best efforts. So just make sure your linked text is what you would want the search term to be, not just the name of your site.

PR by itself has little to no value when it comes to ranking.
It is the amount of anchor text pointing to your site via links - #1 factor which determines rank - and there are other factors.

PR domains do have value depending on the variety/amount of the links to it.
PR5, PR6 can be gained pretty easily and there is a huge difference in a PR7 and
a dramatically difference in a PR8.

Well.. it depends on if the forum is getting indexed by the search engines. Namepros does get indexed. So... Yes having a sig on the forum does add value to your PR. Google has downgraded the value of forum links, however. But still it does have minor value that adds up with 1000 posts.

Alexa of 800K is very high lower the better.

Yes, I agree, PageRank doesn't do much for you on it's own. It's an ingredient in SEO. Like baking a cake, you wouldn't really want to eat just one of the ingredients by itself. However, like with baking a cake, it won't come out too well without an important ingredient. PageRank is an important ingredient in SEO.

I would not recommend to sell that domain by itself. The domain, along with the website combined creates a far greater value than just the domain, or just the website separately.

No doubt.. well, the domain and/or website isn't for sale anyway.. just a hypothetical regarding PR. Thanks!
