Does hosting location matter?

I've been with Dreamhost for a year now and I think the servers are pretty slow, but I don't hear anyone else complain about it. Could this be because I am in Europe and Dreamhost in California?

Would it be any better if I would find hosting on the east coast? I know the obvious answer would be to find hosting in Europe but the prices here are ridiculous!

Yeah, you should feel pretty slow from Europe. Texas is the best place for server location for both Europe and Asia, Australia.

Well another reason for this imo dreamhost oversells there services big time thus over loading their servers and you will see apache problems, slow loading time etc. etc.

You're definitely going to feel some slowdown as server location does have an effect to an extent in that different countries will feel different speeds depending upon the location and quality of the network.

No, I haven't. I wanted to get an objective opinion first. I was in Florida recently and noticed it wasn't much better from there so I think it is related to Dreamhost overloading their servers like ihosty said. Considering the price I can live with it though. I mainly use it for simple adsense sites.

I am with dreamhost, from the UK, and currently i'm not too impressed with them, my sites often have slowdowns, almost daily, and speed isn't really good, in fact FTP is terrible, i am lucky to get 3 kb/sec when uploaded, althought through their webftp i get much more

And you still with them? Why don't you change it?

kwan, do you need servers in America for seo-targetting or just because of price?

I think it happens partly because of the location (because it influences the loading speed of the sites) and partly because of overselling.

paid upfront for 12 months, because it worked out $50 less that way, and everyone else I know who has accounts with them, receives excellent performance.

Sorry for the slow response. I'm looking for hosting in the US purely for the price. To give you an idea, with DH I get 200GB storage and 2TB bandwidth for $7.95 a month. In Holland I would pay 240 euro (= $300 !!!) for half that.

But apparantly it is the distance that makes it slow for me. Does anyone know any hosters on the east coast that offer similar PHP hosting. Important is unlimited domains and root access. If possible I would like some links to sites that are hosted there to test the speed for myself.

What kind of hosting would you like to have - shared or dedicated?

I'm not sure about different hosts, but what server are you on with dreamhost? I used to be on licorice, which was just terrible, pages would take ages to load, but I emailed asking them if i could move to another server, and they moved me onto a new one, this is far far quicker (from the UK) the only delay in pages loading is generally the advertising code, I'm now back to being a happy DH customer (for now) :)

I tested the serverload before (i'm on snocap) but that's not the problem. I also compared the server you're on and the response time isn't much better for me.

Right now I'm looking for shared hosting. I want to move to dedicated hosting but not until I find hosting I'm happy with.
