I am currently listed top 5 on search.msn for a fairly competitive search phrase (and the desired one), but do not even show up in the top 500 for the phrase in Google (using googlerankings.com). What is my issue? Is there that big of a difference in what the two engines are looking for?

I feel content is good and site has been around for a year. I do pay for some advertising with google for this phrase, would that prevent me from showing up on the normal results?

thanks for any help

You need links from high ranking sites, and possibly quite a few of them to get Google on your side if it really has been a year of quality SEO. MSN is the lovable 'easy' search engine, Google is super attractive, but unfortunately thinks it is better than you.

Advertising with google does not affect page rankings.
