Common practice among registrars?

I was checking the availabilty of a domain at Godaddy, and the results were that it was indeed available, but at a hefty price. I poked around the whois info and it didn't seem to be registered to anyone.

I checked with a couple other registrars and found it free for the taking, so I bought it.

Is it normal for registrars to offer presumably open domains at sky high prices?

gd is not real time, and often they may do reverse of what happened to you as well.

ie: show a domain as available to register, but it's not.

imo...

I guess not! Almost a week since I bought it and GD still shows it available in their auction.

So that would mean the domain was listed by the previous owner, and still shows up in auctions while being unregistered...

I had a similar experience at GD last week. I checked the domain one place, had to leave for awhile. I found a code for godaddy, and checked the availability again. GoDaddy said "available" and the price was $250??? I put in my cart, changed to one year (still $250),and added code, voila- .99ยข. Not sure why they think anyone would pay $250 for a domain available anywhere?

What I have found also, is that Godaddy is in business to make money. There are many time when a premium domain has become available, and Godaddy will take it themselves, and resell at the higher price.
