Pushing from different registrars

I've bought a couple domains from members here and had to open accounts at the registrars that the domains were with to have them pushed to me. At this point, doing this is no big deal but I don't want to have to keep getting accounts at new registrars every time I buy a domain.

I don't understand why, for example, a domain from Whiz.in can't be transferred to Godaddy... or can it? How do you know which registrars can be transferred to and from?

I see domains that I'm interested in buying on the forum and don't know if to buy the domains I need to have an account at the registrar they're with or not.

Can someone explain pushing and transferring from different registrars?

Thanks!

You can transfer domains between any registrars but you need to pay for transfer. Push between accounts at same registrar is usually free.

OK, I see. Thanks.

If anyone reads this and knows various registrar's push fees off the top of their head, please post them. I don't mind going from site to site trying to find the push costs for godaddy, estdomains, moniker, etc, etc, but those sites can be a bit user unfriendly. So, if it's no bother and you know a registrar's fee, I'd appreciate the post.

You need to look at transfer prices. For instance Godaddy transfers pricelist can be found here http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/transfers/landing.asp?isc=daytona08&se=+&ci=8993&bulk=1

Thanks John. One question...

For .com they say:

"Transfer Pricing (per year per domain): $6.99"

Does that mean, if I have a .com that expires in a month, and I transfer it to Godaddy today, I pay $6.99 and then have to pay their yearly registration for the .com in a month? The way they have it worded sounds like the $6.99 covers the transfer and a year's registration. Is their wording confusing or is it just me?

A transfer from one registrar to another includes a year's registration. And you don't "lose" any remaining time. As you are suspecting, you can often renew a domain and save some money by doing a transfer to a cheaper registrar. For example, transfers to Domainsite.com are $6.99 for most domains and so is their first year hand registration. After the first year the fee is $7.99.

My advice is to open up accounts as you need to with these other registrars. This gives you several options:

1) You don't have to renew/transfer the domain right away. If you decide to turn around and sell the domain, you can save paying the fee.

2) Transfering a domain between owners can be a headache. A domain sale will generally be much smoother if the selling can get their money and then push to the seller and let them deal with any transfer.

3) Most transfers take about 5 days so you have to wait during that time before you get your domain.

Then you can later transfer the domains to your main account(s) so you don't lose track of domains scattered all over the place.

Keep in mind:

- Some registrars (Godaddy) will not allow you to transfer your domain out for 60 days if someone pushes it to you AND the registrant information changes.

- Some domains, like .ws and .bz cannot be transfered to another registrar.

- Some registrars charge higher fees than others. So if you are used to paying $12 for a .mobi you may discover it will cost you $35 someplace else and should consider that in for your purchase price.

- In general I suggest not trying to do a transfer if there is less than 10 days to the renew date. I have seen domains that have expired successfully be transfered away from Directi. But other registars may not let you and then you may have to renew for the transfer to work, thus paying for an extra year.
