This week marks the first time .com has a net loss of registrations! In other words, more .com drops than gains and more .tips (example) gains than drops (of course no .tips can't be dropped yet though).

I assume this is due to domainers realizing the new gTLDs are a better investment considering they have a choice between TheBestGolfCourseClub.com vs. Golf.Club.

I don't think this is because businesses are switching from .com to .tips, yet etc., but rather domainers dumping their huge .com portfolios and using the money they would normally spend on renewals of TheBestGolfCourseClub.com to instead invest in Golf.Club.

I think businesses will make the switch, but keep their .coms for a few years, having them forward to the new, shorter, more attractive alternative vanity domains.

The problem with looking at .com domains on a daily basis is that you miss the larger trends. And there were far larger swings during the Domain Tasting period (2005-2009).

No. What you are seeing is normal large TLD activity.

Based on what I've seen with TLDs like .CO, I think the reverse will apply and the keyword style new gTLDs will be pointed/forwarded to the primary brand website (typically a .COM or .ccTLD). More .CO domains are forwarded in this manner than there are developed .CO domains. (I haven't run a web usage survey on .CO for quite some time.)

Not true, on average .com gets more than 10K new registrations per day.
For new extensions, the registrations are more like in the two-figure range.
Are you looking at registrarstats ? Again, there are ups and downs from one day to another but the overall trend is growth.

Interesting math. So +800,000 = net loss?

According to jmcc's site, .com picked up almost 800,000 regs last 2 months.

every weekend there are net losses in .com but only on the weekends, not weekdays. most weekdays are like 20k gains for .com.

also no one will be able to register golf.club, it will be a reserved domain..

It will for sure be more than a few years... Considering the amount spend on promoting .com's and the fact that most people are not even aware of the new TLD's a lot of companies will continue on .com. A "problem" with the new TLD's is that they are not really providing anything new. Why spend time and money on promoting a .tips domain when the .com domain is already well known? the visitor is still reaching the same website.

As mentioned I think we will see a lot of new domains being redirected to the .com or a subsections of the .com. These new domains can be attractive for campaigns and subsections.
