BuyDomains had Insider Information on Nintendo Wii?

I just found this to be very interesting. BuyDomains.com has registered a single Wii domain a week before the announcement. Now I do know that some editors had known the news about the name a few days before the rest, but did BuyDomains.com have this insider information as well?

I am talking about WiiOnline.com. The domain has been registered since 4-17-2006, while the announcement for Nintendo Wii was 4-27-2006.

Could it just have been a coincidence merely 1 week before the name was announced? I have a hard time believing that. :td:

Interesting. How come they only got a single name I wonder? Nintendo themselves didn't even register NintendoWii.com until April 27th.

A possible explanation is they registered WIIOnline.com as a typo domain of WWIIOnline.com (a popular MMORPG).

Yes it was most likely because of the typo. It does get some traffic too. I just didn't want to bump the thread because I knew -RJ- was right.

RJ's probably right but still, it is very coincidental that i was registered just 10 days before the announcement.

i had a "source" tell me just before the name was released that it was just a marketing scam which is the reason i didn't buy anyway but we'll see i guess

Nintendo actually gave clues that the name would be "Wii". They had videos released where they kept repeating "We will change gaming forever" with the Nintendo Revolution system in the background. And they kept announciating the "We" part.

But it was impossible to tell that the name was going to be "Wii" just from these videos.

That's true cfguru. Also, I doubt the rumours about it's official name not being wii are untrue - They ahave already changed the name once, and it would get confusing and be bad marketing to do so again.
