Various possible choices as there is no simple answer

1/ If for business maybe look at a ccTLD . co.uk in your case
or .BIZ
2/ Is it related to .internet ,then Maybe .NET or even .ws
3/ Is it a information site Maybe .Info
4/ Pseudo Organization .ORG
5/ Or Maybe try getting similar Name in .COM that is Available

What's your goal? Barefoottech gave some tips, but that'll all depend on what
your use for the domain will be.

I agree,
but IMO get another name ;) be creative

I mean, it sounds like you have something in mind, so why do half things ?

Think of another nice catcy name where .com+.net+.info+.org+ ? are unregged.
Or available in aftermarket.

To respond directly your question.
If .com isn't available --> get the rest :notme:
(after carefully evaluation of the .com version content)

In some cases, there is no good alternative. Buy the .com or make an offer on it, or go for an alternate longer .com name. It really depends on the size of the company, the budget, and whether your true market is locally, nationally, or worldwide; or has a consumer vs. business customer base.

Recorded message: get the .net, then .org, then .biz, then .info LOL

The problem with the .com TLD is that alot of combinations of words are running out as they have already been registered. I think .com is highly overated it doesn't matter what tld you have it just matters if your site has the best content.

If you want to resell it I think .info is good.
If you want to build a site .net is better.
I personaly prefer the .wow extention

It will depend what I want to do with the site.

From Development perspective:

If I have a unique idea and the best domian name in .com is already taken I would not register any other tld. I would rather be a little more creative with the domian name and find an alternative .com to establish my own brand.

If the idea is not unique then nature of the idea will decide the best possible site as stated by barefoottech.

From Reseeling perspective:

I would register any TLD which I think that the name itself fits well with the extension regardless of the .com, .net, etcc. I have had registered few .info keyword domians for which the .com was also available. :)

Hope it helps.
