Domain Counts
82,418,599 .Com
12,470,055 .Net
7,834,572 .Org
5,276,597 .Info

even with these numbers, i'd bet they are more legitimate .org sites built out than .net sites

In my opinion, without any figures to back it up, but just experience, after .com it is quite simply the country you are in at the time!!

I am from england, so we use .co.uk for more websites than .com
I live in australia, where you really only see .com.au, hardly ever .com!! the average aussie will always put a .au on the end of a .com!!
Same as everything else, germans will insist on .de, etc etc

I think oh so too often, these forums look at domains from an american point of view and forget about the rest of the world!!

I would say

.com
.what ever country you are in
.net
.org
.info
.me

forget anything else unless you have millions to develop!! or you get really lucky, like sites like cdcovers.cc etc etc

Besides .net and .org, I vote for .cn, for two reasons, one obviously the huge population, the strong economic growth, and the sheer number of internet users. Two, for chinese domainers, .cn domains are only 1/10 of cost of .com/net/org.
