The problem occurs when you try to explain to people how to visit your site: hot.pizza.

first they will type hotpizza.com

Not according to the end users who are buying .com.
Sure, not according to endusers who are buying .com domains.
But for all others.

In fact it is not hard to explain that these days.
If you 'explain' them to type in 'hot dot pizza' they will not type in 'hotpizza.com'.
Unless they are obtuse - but they are not, they are smart - they use smartphones and they are millions.

Too bad those "others" can be count on one hand.

Probably true, but most people like to stick with extensions that do not need explaining.

Exactly - that's why new TLDs are created (beside money reasons) - they are self explanatory.

How exactly are they self explanatory when you just 5 minutes ago had to explain how to type in dot pizza to make sure your potential visitor would not go to pizza.com instead?

This wasn't a real 'explanation', it was more simply an information about the name of the web adress, what to type in. Nothing other than with a .com domain.

To say ''You are welcome to visit our website hot dot pizza!'' is 100 % the same 'method' like if you say ''You are welcome to visit our website hotpizza dot com'' - there is no need for 'explanations'.

Lol ok. It seems to me like you are contradicting yourself a lot.

.
I disagree. The whole point is that .com is self explanatory. The new gTLDs aren't.

If you have this impression, it's ok.
But I have to say that I don't contradicted myself.
I think I explained it (my view, not any new TLD) very well.

.com is self explanatory for the 'generation .com' but new TLDs are 100 % self explanatory for 'new generations' (because they grow up with them) and I would say for 99 % of the rest - maybe 1 % will not have the intellect to understand that .com can be replaced by new TLDs now.

Okay, my boring legit top 5:

1) .com
2) .net
3) .org
4) .info
5) .ca (but only because I am Canadian and they do get used here quite a lot)

I am sure people backing all the new extensions won't agree with me but I have been in this game for 10 years so please don't hate me for being old school.

+1 for that list for the same reasons ;)

Only for me, positions 2-4 are not necessarily in order. I dev minisites (for myself or clients) and sometimes a .info will work far better than a .org and viceversa... depending on the niche, market, name, etc.

The method is the same but the result will most likely be different.

Saying ''You are welcome to visit our website hot dot pizza!'' will most likely end up with the visitor going to hotpizza.com (unless you give further explanations and say "make sure you don't type .com at the end")
Saying ''You are welcome to visit our website hotpizza dot com'' will end up in all cases with the visitor going to the correct address: hotpizza.com. No explanations needed.
Hence .com is self-explanatory. The new gTLDs aren't.

No, I really don't think so - simply because people have brain ;)
Maybe one year ago this 'mistake' would have been happen (but this phase is over) - so if I say THESE DAYS ''You are welcome to visit our website hot dot pizza!'' 99% of the audience will simply type in hot.pizza - there is no logical reason to type not exactly in what they have been told clearly.

In order for the new gTLDs to be self-explanatory to the "new generations" those gTLDs first need to be widely adopted by the "old generations". That's sadly not the case.

It's not about brains. It's about what people expect.
