In order for the new gTLDs to be self-explanatory to the "new generations" those gTLDs first need to be adopted by the "new generations". And right now that's not really the case. And I'm not sure they ever will be.
About 10 years agao I was one of the first in my 'area' who bought a smartphone with a touchscreen.
Still years after that / after the first smartphones (touchscreen) so many people were using their old keybord phone/s, they all were sceptical.
And what happend?
Today nearly everybody is using a smartphone (touchscreen)!

New TLDs, future #1 .top = smartphone
Old TLDs, #1 .com = keyboard phone (of course it's still ok to use a keyboard phone)

The problem occurs when you try to explain to people how to visit your site: hot.pizza.

first they will type hotpizza.com

Wrong
I never would type in first .com
Not all think like you
Think global

New TLDs don't bring anything new to the table. It's just another way to visit a web address. The only thing it currently does is confuse the average internet user.

I expect people have / use brain ;)
The first time I drove my daughter to school I had to make sure I was going the right way as I never drove to that school before. Nowadays I don't think about it anymore, it's routine. I don't use my brains when driving her to school. I expect it to be on the same place as the day before.
.com = routine. 30 years of it.

The core of my message was the well known 'fear of change, fear of dropping of habit'.

Mayyybe CURRENTLY some new TLDs are confusing SOME of our population - but no problem, as I said, they have brain and they will use it.
But let me remind that we were never before in history so networked - it doesn't take big efforts to get answers fast, especially in web things like domains.

Yes, technology - wise new TLDs are not new.
But in creating beautiful and easy webnames they are top.

For example, what you will do if your daughter will change the school because of some unforeseeable reasons?
You will learn the new way by using your brain.
And you will have no problem with it.

And maybe you will say at the end: 'This new way is much more beautiful than the old one.'

True, taking her to a new school will make me use my brain again driving there. But why should I? I'm happy with the school. It is globally known and has a perfect reputation. Why would I want to put here in a lesser school that only has a few students and that a lot of people won't find even with directions?

Great that the school of your daughter is the perfect one for her and of course I hope you will never come in the situation that she have to change it.

I don't say that .com owners should change to other TLDs.
What I said was, that they are able to do so (because they have / use brain) if they have to do so or if they like to do so - and this point you have answered in a 'positive way'.

We all now that the '.com school' have not endless place for 'good pupils = good domains'.
So the project was to build new equivalent or even better schools = new TLDS - to make place for new good pupils = new good domains.

I didn't say I don't want to change. I said I don't need to. Since the school is perfect. It is my choice for her to stay there. She also likes the school and wants to stay there. Nobody is trapped here.
