It is an excellent domain name, the problem is with development. eBay has such a stranglehold with online auctions it would be hard to compete.

It's not gotta be another eBay. Currently they redirect the domain to their main website USHomeAuction.com (foreclosure auctions).

Eh.

I doubt people typing in "Auction.com" are looking for Real Estate auctions. The value there might be marketing. It is a very easy domain to remember that can be branded.

Yeah I doubt this will be used for something similar to eBay.

So much money and branding would be required to compete with eBay that the domain choice could come from a fresh reg.

Auction.com is one awesome domain

At least Auction.com is worth the :$: and then some. I wish a competitor with an awesome domain such as this would overtake ebay, which has become quite fascistic with their recent policies :td: Oh well, congrats to the new owner(s) of Auction.com!

here is another problem with auction.com:

the top 3 countries searching the term are australia, new zealand, and england. so even if they did type "auction.com" into their browsers expecting home auctions, their going to end up getting the wrong country!

bid.com would be a far better domain to compete against ebay anyhow. wow, belongs to a company that has nothing to do with auctions.

Indeed, and not forgetting all the branded URL's you could create with the relevance search engines love.
i.e.
http://RealEastate.Auction.com
http://Car.Auction.com
...insert anything here.Auction.com

Once setup correctly for SEO and a decent amount of PPC, it could potentially be better than eBay.

Auction is a 'natural' search word, eBay is not.

People don't search for eBay when looking for auction goods - do they?
They will search on eBay for goods.

If they new owners have the money and knowledge, this could become an eBay killer IMHO.

Funny how so many dislike Ebay. Add me to that group. Ebay has ruined the wonderful idea of cheapy auctioning off common household items and turned it into a marketplace with high fees. Lots of sellers are tired of paying their fees. Scammers are all over and Ebay's only concern is making more money.

Auction.com at $1.7 million...hmm...I can see end-user like an auction house like Christy's or Sotheby's but they really don't need the domain. Overpayment imho.
