Sedo, the online domain specialist,confirms the sale of the world's most lucrative domain name, Sex.com, for a record $13 million.

The sale enters the record books as one of the web's most famous sites, and now ranks as commanding the single highest recorded price paid for a domain name not just in 2010, but of all time.

The sale of sex.com was brokered by Sedo's senior domain broker who conducted a buyer search on behalf of Escom in accordance with an order issued by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California. The process was finalised more quickly than usually expected for a high quality domain name, with the sale taking just three months to complete as opposed to the average of a year.

Nora Nanayakkara, business development director at Sedo, comments, "Domain names of this value rarely become available and we are delighted to have been involved in this historic event.".

Escom acquired the domain in 2006 for a then record $11.5 million. Sedo's recent $13 million sale of Sex.com now holds the record as the highest value domain sale to date, which further demonstrates the continued demand for premium domains and the appreciating value of Sex.com.

Thanks for sharing the info. IMO, $13 million seems like a lot now (and respectfully is), but will most likely become one of the smaller sales in the coming years [for Ultra-Premium Keyword Names].

Just my two cents (give or take a penny): I feel the sale price would have been more under better conditions. With the adult industry taking a pounding over the past couple of years, coupled with the lousy global economy, add that to the owners personal issues, and you have what many in the industry feel was a bargain price overall, even despite it being the highest recorded sale for a Domain Name in the history of the internet. :imho:

I think it is massively overpriced, the biggest problem sex.com has ever had is a random idiot simply using it for parking and not utilizing it fully...had he kept it up properly it would be a killer domain, not just the curiosity it is now

Sounds expensive to me.. You need some pretty good content (lol) to compete with the other big sites in the genre the are established in the market today. A good domainname is not nearly enough in todays (porn)market imo.

Definitely true. In a way, it's a failure of markets that a domain like this ended up undeveloped. Hopefully the current buyer isn't interested just in reselling the domain, or it still won't be put to decent use (perhaps not the best words choice on my part :P).
