.app .APP Registration

Now that .APP is rolling out I thought I'd share a little of our position in .APP domains. I'd love to know what others are doing.

We budgeted just shy of $100k for .APP domain registrations. Several we've already acquired and several we've missed. I'll update our pickups as I can without giving away our position. So far I will share that we picked up:
  • Wedding.app

Trademark Claim
I do have a domain that we registered that has to pass their trademark claim process... it is very generic, not sure who decided to try to call it a trademark, we shall see.

Our Why
To sum it up, Google is our why. I became a domainer back in 2000, when the domain really mattered in SEO. My hunch is that Google won't be able to resist giving some type of preference to quality .APP domain.

Even a small advantage in the SERs or even the Play App Search results, make generic .APP domains valuable.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Slow down folks these are just domains not actual app. App users probably never bother those domains.
Kindda agree. I beleive it can be at best used for 2 purpose;
  1. For a pure mobile only app. Here the .app will be used only to create a website to download the app for Android/ Mac phones. They will have no other online presence.
  2. App development agencies. Here the .app will be used to create a full fledged website. After all, it showcases their professional identity.

As with any domain, don't reg anything you wouldn't sell to your own mother.

In a way this kind of reminds me about the .blog release, nothing really developed there.

I didn't even bother with .blog.

App domain is different than .blog, How?
Suppose You have a functioning app
I grabbed the app domain and developed it.
Your app will get little bit benefit from it (highly unlikely, I doubt users bother to visit the domain to download app) because, I have domain but actual app(s) is your.
Now my only option is write review for your app. lol.

They seem to be going through right now. I noticed the Pending update whois popping up on same names I was searching with Godaddy Registrar - whereas I wasn't before.

I just now am getting failed messages. One domain that I got a fail on shows Godaddy (china) and Pending Update on whois. Wonder if someone in China beat me to it?

Talking to chat now to see what's up.

Yes, I do have some very specific .app domains in my account @ godaddy now, but they shouldnt be in any demand. FYI: I got them for another company I am involved with that is a small niche.

same thing just happened to me; name was avail when I checked with godaddy search, an hour later it was taken but this name had no reason for anyone to register as it relates to my company. Whois status shows "Pending Update" I do not know what this means,

Seems like godaddy search bar is rigged and logged.

I mean in how people were chasing the release, and then it just died.

I think they are delivering those names now... I am just trying to figure out why one that was available that I purchased that says GD got it and is pending update - and then I receive a failed message. But it looks like maybe technical errors:

GD chat response:
as advised for the .apps domains all you need to do is wait for the notification email coming from go daddy as for the previous notification you can just disregard that

My response:
I should wait for further notification but disregard the one I just got that said it failed?

GD chat response:
yes Michael

FYI: Dynadot seems to have 14.99 regs with free privacy and instant delivery on .app

PS: I am not going crazy buying them. Just got a few.

I have regged two app names to back up my website @ Dynadot, without problem and with probably cheapest price. Someone snapped the third one right under my nose, before I paid for the basket. Funny is it's Czech name regged by German company.

Any opinion?
People will search apps which are not available at app store.
Example youtubedownload.app (still available I suggest remove you from tube)

I applied for and lost,

Dispensaries.app
SmartCars.app
DroneCam.app
HomeSecurity.app
FashionDesigner.app
InteriorDesigner.app
StreamTV.app (StreamMovies is/was still available)
VRGames.app
LiveSports.app
VapeShop.app (VapeStore is/was still available)

Ten domains were my budget for .app. So after being told that I wasn't getting them, I figured I'll use the refund for others, but I bought only four. They are...

SportsNews.app
WatchLive.app
CloudNine.app (Cloud9 is/was still available)
BeautySupply.app (BeautySupplies is/was still available)

I have a list of 100 names that are still available. I almost went crazy, but nope!
I believe these names are applicable for an application.

I am only buying a few select general category names myself.

If you see gochina or goaustralia and maybe a few others that's godaddy. Had that happen to me on entertainment.app and got it.

What's weird is that godaddy nailed all my EAP registrations the second the phase hit on my more primo names but was beyond awful on GA today.

The only names they got for me was mame.app and collegebasketball.app neither of which I probably had any competition for.

I saw few good ones available earlier this morning, but I only purchased one for my personal use.
Few sales will come from it, but
1. an app doesn't depend on a website
2. And they are many options for an app url if a website is needed(ex. exampleapp.com, example.com, example.app, subdomains, etc...)...

But I did let a name pass that i kinda wished i got...rrrr lol
I guess I'm tired of collecting dust. It's time to become the enduser.
