.app .APP Registration

Now that .APP is rolling out I thought I'd share a little of our position in .APP domains. I'd love to know what others are doing.

We budgeted just shy of $100k for .APP domain registrations. Several we've already acquired and several we've missed. I'll update our pickups as I can without giving away our position. So far I will share that we picked up:
  • Wedding.app

Trademark Claim
I do have a domain that we registered that has to pass their trademark claim process... it is very generic, not sure who decided to try to call it a trademark, we shall see.

Our Why
To sum it up, Google is our why. I became a domainer back in 2000, when the domain really mattered in SEO. My hunch is that Google won't be able to resist giving some type of preference to quality .APP domain.

Even a small advantage in the SERs or even the Play App Search results, make generic .APP domains valuable.

An Example
I selected
Well, what do you know...graphics.app is available
$328.90
Renewal $218.90 for 1 year

I am afraid instead of making profit I may find myself paying for it.

Total gdn

Try site:.cars
Lot of developed .cars website
About 8,94,000 results (0.45 seconds)
Please note that renewal is more than $2000 and more. There are always some people for anything.
Once again they are happy to pay the registry, but not a domain reseller. How many of .cars domains are sold by domainers, or resold?

.app with eap and renewal cost nothing in it for the domainer. If your buying an app domain to develop an app around it, so be it, but we all know how many lame apps are out there for pretty much every topic, doesn’t make much sense.

Right now the argument is since everyone is registering .app, I will also, not always the most successful move, but since the gtld releases have been dormant a while, many people quickly forget the tens of thousands of gtld for sale threads on namepros without any bids.

You can’t be successful with a 3-4 figure renewal fee in place in the long run, unless you are the underlying registry.

New to the domain investing game. I bought over 30 .app domains. 15 will be using to actually create apps around (already have 4 apps in top 200 free apps.)

Thoughts on a few I’ll share:
Rewards.app
Miner.app
Homework.app
Grants.app
Atm.app

Possibly my final .APP domains...
  • Carriers.app
  • Transporter.app
  • Socially.app
  • Listings.app
  • Landlord.app
  • Warehouse.app
  • CarShipping.app
  • AutoRepair.app
  • Heavyduty.com
You registered these names when domains like tidy.app were available for reg fee, I don’t get it, car shipping app? Warehouse app? You are paying $1xx for those registrations, you could have got them at reg fee, if not, you would not have lost out.

$100k for these names

No. We missed many of our first couple round domains.

Those domains were a total of like $2600.

Earlier in the thread you'll see some of the more expensive domains. All premium in industries we are already invested in... just at a higher level.

I chose GD because of points I have there. Enough points to reg 2 .app domains lol
Well I had 2 out of 4 pre-reg still in play, logged in about 15 minutes into GA to check the status, no change, did a whois, everything was available, then I hand reg'd them with godaddy, they failed to execute even though they placed my order. Then I went to uniregistry, and hand registered them also, and they were into my account right away. So godaddy is backedup, or something has failed, and it is not processing .app, even though it looks like it might be, or showing available for registration.

marijuana.app is taken by Ghost Group - Weedmaps who paid 4.2m for marijuana.com; they now have the matching pair.

Also Berkens took Vape.app

Yeah I think it was about $5,000 like @wwwweb's Day 2 calculation.
Coinbase stepped up, and got a lot of coinbase related names, crypto app is a great name, and the owner probably wants a great price, which he may never get, but someone probably wants a branded app, most apps like binance, or kucoins aren't even app store listed, you have to trust the certificate internally.

Today we see crypto as crypto, but I tend to believe one day it will just be classified as currency.

What a lot of people aren’t realizing is with this .app extension it will make a lot of consumers feel more comfortable and aware based off marketing that the content they are viewing related to a mobile app.

Plus the abilities to put pixel within the .app to track who clicks and their behavior and location allows us to build lookalikes where as referring people directly to App Store doesn’t give us that.

Any app developer would choose .app over .com for the first time ever as it makes the product so much more appealing to advertise.

As you see on social media people advertise their apps as “calm app” “airtime app” “uber app” “tinder app” it can now be put together with meaning. Consumers will see .app more than ever and any other tld when it comes to social media advertisements aswell

I'm sure there will be some nice aftermarket sales for the really super premium ones like crypto, casino, office, bet, cam, blockchain, coin, etc .app, but there can be some danger with 2000 renewal fees, however, the persons who purchased those high-priced domains probably don't worry about high renewal fees.

I imagine we'll see a high flip within 2 weeks --- ____app purchased for 9500 USD and sold for 55000 USD.
But I don't foresee hundreds of flips like these . We'll see.

Am I correct... google wouldn't have any issues with the domain forwarding to a https site. Correct?
The site itself must have a certificate before a browser will let you pull it up. Therefore it won't redirect without a SSL. (or your forwarding service providing one)
