When I win an expired auction domain at Godaddy and the name is transferred into my account the Whois automatically updates to my Whois. If I add privacy to the name after it enters my account will my Whois show up in a Whois history search if I add privacy right away even though the domain Whois showed my Whois for a short period of time.

This is a great question to ask Godaddy themselves as they have good customer service. From my understanding though they give you the option to purchase/add the privacy right when you get the domain before it goes into your account. This means your information should not show up in the Whois because you selected the privacy option.

The only case it would show is if the domain was already in your possession and you decided to add the privacy at a later time.

Thanks for answering. I know I could have probably called my rep but posting a question here is so much easier. I can add the privacy if I was registering it as a new domain but was wondering if I can add it to a name that I bought at GD auctions and add the privacy before it is transferred into my account so the whois wouldn't show my name at all in the history.

I have done this twice.

One time I bought the privacy at the time of the domain purchase and my info never showed up in whois searches.

The second time I bought the name then after it was in my account I added privacy and my info was found in a search.

If you want to make sure your info is kept private, do it at time of purchase.

P.S. Once I hand reg'd a domain and didn't buy the privacy at the time of purchase, but I bought it about 5-10 mins later and my info never showed up in a whois history search.

Yes you definitely can, like said above just simply do it at the time of purchase they give you the option because when you win an auction you have to pay for it so at the check out screen you can select privacy and that should work smoothly.

That's true, I have to remember to do that. Sometimes I don't go through checkout and just wait the 3 days for them to automatically put it in my account but I totally forgot that you can checkout yourself. Thanks for the reminder.
