Adding Whois privacy immediately after registering the domain - Useless?

GoDaddy has some privacy-only discount codes which I'd like to take advantage of in tandem with their regular discount codes for domain names. If I do one at a time, I'd pay $1 for privacy and $1.67 for the domain = $2.67 total per domain, rather than the $8.37 I managed to get it down to using all-at-once coupon codes.

I know that daily domain registrations are publicly published somewhere, but I don't know with which frequency it updates, nor whether whois information is included in this list.

Therefore my question is, if I add privacy immediately (a few minutes) after purchasing the domain, is there a chance that the original, unprivate whois data will be archived somewhere (eg. by archival whois scraper tools such as domaintools)?

Thanks.

it's possible

but imo, privacy is waste of money and counter-productive to sales.

It is also possible on GD to create different Profiles which you can use to populate the whois fields during checkout.

Though, that would still result in a cost of privacy. I don't know if you used the coupon and a profile that the coupon would be applied to the profile as the profile is the next step I believe. Confirmation if you got this to work?

My Uni profile is set for anything coming in or being registered to automatically be private.

I don't believe privacy hinders a sale whatsoever as if you look at previous sales on venues such as Sedo, some of the greatest ones had privacy. People will find you if the name is good whether or not you have privacy. In my experience, people will still email the privacy email and it will still come through.

I believe privacy is just taken as a "blocked number" now. You will most likely still pick up the phone, except hang up if it's a telemarketer. Just apply this to whois privacy and reverse roles.

As far as scraping goes, it just depends on who scrapes it from new registrations first by comparing zone files... then your dirty business could be in the open forever.

Hi you see a little box top right in your basket page that invites you to Apply Profile. So you can add privacy after this, before checkout, still using coupon - have done that. You can also set one of your Profiles to be the default one for registrations, but I have seen it sometimes not get auto-applied (I suspect when following a different path to the cart, such as putting a domain in it before logging in) so I encourage you to push the button to apply it in the basket every time.

A default profile doesn't mean squat. If you don't choose the profile you want at checkout and save, they will post your account billing information on whois, regardless of what's in your default profile. In fact, I'm not sure they still won't publish your account info. No way that is done by mistake. GD is doing a fantastic job of chasing long time customers away....with rocks.

Another technique you can do, is populate your whois data with MAKE-BELIEVE registrant info during registration time (just make sure you use a verifiable email address).

Use a reputable FAKE info for the bots to capture. For example, you can pretend that your domain is owned by some fictitious big-time sounding name. Then after you applied the PRIVACY, you can go back to your domain account and change the registrant info back to your original true identity.

We wouldn't recommend using fake information in the Whois of any domain. You may later face ownership issues or have difficulty confirming this information as being accurate

To ensure that valid contact information is available in Whois and your accurate contact details are listed in your Registrar's Control Panel, while ensuring that your privacy is kept safe online, Domains Whois Privacy purchase is recommended.

What are the benefits of applying privacy to a domain?

Your contact information associated with any domain is available online. Anyone can perform a Whois search for your domain and get your name, address, telephone number, fax number, email address. This disclosure often leads to privacy issues like receiving more spam emails, receiving unsolicited telephone calls, faxes and letters.

Applying Whois Privacy protects your identity from spammers and other types of abuse, by safeguarding your contact details displayed in domain Whois searches.

If you were paying attention to the issue in this thread, the guy's problem was whether bots can capture his personal info from his whois data between the time he paid for the purchase of the domain, and the time he actually purchased a whois privacy and applied it on the domain.

The fake info i suggested is only done during this short transition period. Once the whois privacy setting has been applied, you then type in your true identity on your registrant info.

There is no way of know whether someone will be able to get the contact details after registration or not. If privacy is a concern, Domains Whois Privacy should be enabled while registering the domain.

There is no way to tell if the account info is real or not even. There are many people with multiple fake go daddy accounts for privacy reasons and to use discount codes.

Does it provide leverage when a buyer contacts you for a sall? What I mean is, would the buyer assume they're dealing with a large domain holding company?

Enabling Whois Privacy will allow you to stop mails from reaching your inbox. Typically end users put the domain name in the browser to see what is being displayed there before initiating contact. If you are selling your domain, your parking page should indicate that the domain is on sale.
