So I have been asking myself... How many characters long can a sucessful .mobi be? Im not really sure. If search engines and predictive spelling is combined it should be a breeze to navigate even the longest keyword searches. At least I would think...What are your opinions?

From all the posts I've seen, there are definitely 2 distinct sides on this issue. There's about 50% of the crowd saying short is king, and won't bother with anything about 7-8 characters, and the other half says if .Mobi takes off, and the mobile devices and mini-keyboards advance along with it, the length won't really be an issue, any more-so than a normal (pc) domain.

Myself, I'm torn on the issue because both have valid points. But I'm still sticking to shorter names overall, and even the 2 word names I've registered or purchased are short words.

I think that no matter how long a name is, it won't matter. If a user wants to look up something they will. I registered great short names, and I registered great long names. :D Either way, if this all works out I'll be covered

With the new technology being developed right now, lenght of .Mobi domains will be Irrelevant. This technology, in my oppinion, will effect domain name prices drastically. Thanks.

just make sure the words you get are good and dont worry about the length. I would rather own realestate.mobi than ywb.mobi

If they're short and, that's good, regardless of extension. If they're common generics, that's good, regardless of extension. If they're both... well then it looks like you'll be buying drinks! Seriously though, until mobile devices have a much better means of input, shorter will definitely be better. As part of my personal "learning to live with .mobi" initiative I've been trying to do as much of my work as possible on my XV6700. That keyboard is supposedly about as nice as it gets, but it ain't no laptop. Of course, the relevance of domain length will become far less important as people pick their favorite mobile SEs and get their bookmarks in place. I mean... how many URLs did you actually type in today???

Keywords up to a maximum of 8 letters, specific to mobile devices, are my favourite for the time being.

Yeah, when .Mobi was first released, the first name (outside of obvious premiums) I really wanted (based on my own mobile useage) was LiveFootball.Mobi which I got... i subsequently bought LiveOn.Mobi with a view to exploiting the obvious subdomain potential.

So, long or short, if it works with .mobi - It Works.... :)

If most people rely on SEs for probably 90% of their surfing today, then it will probably be something like 95% for mobile surfing; if you're paying for downloads or in a hurry (who isn't), you're more likely to want to just click on a link than try typing in urls, as well as stick with trusted SEs and sources, ( such as .mobi?). :imho: speaking for myself of course - not everyone's as rational (or lazy or slow typist) :guilty:

This is also a good argument for the idea of a mobile ecosystem (see other thread).

Generally, shorter is better, but I have been happy to get my hands on generic, meaningful, or memorable names with 15 or less characters, so that the name (with .mobi tagged on) will still fit across any phone screen and look good on search engine listings.

This is much like the other big question that faces .MOBI investors... which is whether or not the name should have a definite relation or relevance to mobile devices, or surfing on the go. Half the crowd says yes, the other half says not really, because if .mobi succeeds it will be used for all types of sites and services.

- Length.

- Mobile relevance.

There is definitely a split down the middle, in the overall public opinion on both of these topics, and their importance.

I don't really like my cell phone very much. I have a few friends, however, who see a cell as an extension of their body. They can thumb a text message at amazing speeds. Most younger people can use a cell like I use a fork too. That's important because they are the people most likely to surf mobi. Most of us, at this site, use computers and prefer computers (there might even be some mobi site owners that have never seen their site on a real mobile device, just that emulator). The cell crowd is a totally different type of user and that's best to notice. They are totally comfortable tapping in text Smessages at high speed with their thumb (I'm a novice, I use my index finger). Thumbing messages is a skill and not a trying task. So, when you think of names for MOBI, keep in mind who is using the medium. Don't base decisions on how computer users relate to cell phones and the Internet. Focus on how cell phone users interact with the cell phones and the upcoming mobile web. Short names are still great (popsongs.mobi), but NewPopSongVideoHits.mobi is a lot better than npsvh.mobi which won't mean a thing to a keyword driven search engine.

Speaking of Search engines: On my phone, it is easier to type in search phrases than a URL. A search box is the first thing with which I am presented. That's something to really consider. Also, if mobile companies start screening for sites that have mobile compatible content (and blocking out the rest), the length of the domain name might become totally irrelevant. People might use a search box instead of typing a url in a browser. Which means: keyword keyword, keyword.

I might be wrong, but that's what I think. Any keyword mobi is exactly the right length: short or long.

Great post. Well spoken and gives us a lot to think about.

Thanks.

:bingo: bionichead

and yes keywords will be the main thing typed in not urls...in 5-10 years surfing on a phone will be as normal as turning on your car radio.
