So you have some .mobi names and you want to get a return on your investment? Well, there is a way no matter if .mobi takes off or not. How is that you ask? This is just my opinion so no flames please.
Assuming you have picked up some decent keyword .mobi names, you have a leg up on the mobile internet. The reason I say that is a very small percentage of .coms actually have a mobile version of their site. Google now has a beta search where people have an option to "search the mobile web" when they search from their mobile device. If you run a search you will see a lot of wap sites and mobile compliant sites (and yes some .mobi sites here and there).
So what does that mean for someone with keyword(s) .mobi? If you develope your site now you have a decent chance of getting to the front page of mobile web search results. Granted, you will be reaching a small percentage of web surfers (only those on a mobile device) but you can get to the top of some searches you would have no chance of showing up on otherwise. I would rather be on the front page of 3-5% of mobile searches (just a rough guesstimate) than burried in the results of regular searches.
My reasoning for this, and correct me if I am wrong, the search engines (google included) give you a better rating if you have the keywords in your domain name (all other things being equal, meaning unique and fresh content among other things).
For the names I have registered, most if not all have been registered in all of the other extensions, at the same time, most have no mobile site up and will not show in google searches of the "mobile web". So while I can't compete against their already established sites in a regular google search very easily, I will beat the heck out of them in a mobile web search.
So, if you have good keyword mobi names and want to see a return on your investment. Don't worry about the traffic auction, the latest .mobi news, or what the other guy thinks of .mobi. Just develope your keyword.mobi and weap the rewards for being one of the first on the mobile web. Yes there are already people there, but you can rank up there with them if you develop now. Wait a couple years and you will be playing catch up.
I'm sure someone will make the comment, "you could develope a mobile site with any other extension with keywords and get the same rewards", and my answer to that would be, yeah you are right. However, I couldn't register those keywords in any other ext (other than cctlds) because they were already taken, but I do have some great keywords in the .mobi that are begging for development. It would be my loss if I didn't devlepe and ride the mobile internet wave.
For those with other than keyword(s).mobi names, this strategy may not work quit as well, but with development you may be surprised by your results.
Good luck and happy developing
