here's the value i see in .mobi...
some people say there's no point in .mobi because sites will be able to redirect to a mobil compatible page when it detects a cell phone. that's fine, but it misses the point...the user has no idea whether or not a given site will have that ability to redirect, so until most sites have that redirect capability, and most won't for a very long time, surfing the net via a mobil will be very frustrating...some sites will work, others won't. that's where the utility of .mobi comes in. if a user goes to a .mobi site, there is no frustration. he's guaranteed to be able to view the page on his phone.
but with that in mind, i don't see how .mobi is of any use if search engines or phones don't default to it. if google doesn't automatically show only .mobi results when the user is on a cell phone, then how does the user benefit? he'll have to filter the results himself looking for .mobis? that sounds very impractical. the user will either have to filter himself or just type in .mobi domains, which not many people do...most use search engines.
therefore, i see the utility of .mobi in theory, but i don't see that utility being realized unless mobile phones and search engines cooperate to have a .mobi default. where am i wrong? is defaulting really the key issue?
