After 3 years, I think it might finally be time to take a step back from the domain industry. I will be liquidating most of my portfolio in the coming weeks. I would be willing to make myself available for some individual consultations but I will largely be focusing on other projects.

There are 2 things that I think are worth emphasizing before I go:
  1. This industry needs to change. There are too many leaches. Everyone is trying to sell something that you don't need. Realize that free isn't free and most paid products are not needed. Some tools are worth the subscription fee but most domainer to domainer services and products are crap.
  2. There are too many domain "gods." Sure, they have made some money but look deep enough and you'll quickly learn that most know only a little more than you. They are just good at gift wrapping crap. Stop following and start leading.

So if you want a free piece of advice or would like to know about my hopes, dreams, and aspirations... post below. I'm an open book.

Otherwise, it's been fun.

Hi Shane. I got sick for about three days and I see this regrettable decision (for us) has already reached 9 pages. So forgive me for not being one of the "first responders". You were always a shining bushel with your posts here. You will be sadly missed. Good luck with your education and may your future business adventures be profitable ones (to paraphrase CNN's Richard Quest).

I really appreciate it. Thanks for the best wishes. :)

All the best to you, and thank you for sharing your wisdom. I learned a lot from you, and still use the paypal disclaimer you gave me years ago.
Its time to go learn something else, and that's very smart idea.
And many thanks for bringing to my attention what a piece of crap AD is, I did respect the man, but you made me realize that was a mistake. Maybe saved me, definitely saved others money
Take care eh

Going to work on my branding business and building websites. I used to develop and it was a great time. Exciting to see people interacting in what you built.

Thanks for asking.

Branding and web development are two businesses that complement domaining extremely well. Instead of saying goodbye, why not stick around and post in the Development Discussion boards here at NamePros? The area needs active members like you to create new threads that spark interesting discussions. You might be surprised at the networking possibilities and web development resources you can find here. There are many experts who share their knowledge freely in discussion threads when the right questions are asked.

If you need a change, try finding a new avatar or come up with a new username. (I'm sure the community could help with that too.) ;)

"Get busy livin', or get busy dyin'".

I'm sure you'll make any new venture work out, or will simply make a shift to something that does work ;) And with something you at least half enjoy, as it's clear your heart is not in domaining anymore.

I'm glad it's not full time for me (am a dev) as it's a crazy business in terms of keeping track of the ever shifting market. For those who love that, good on you :) Otherwise, it is time to make a change as a dislike for one's jobs makes for a very unhappy life.

All the best :)

Good luck dude.

I've recently done the same, for similar reasons, although I was only intentionally small time / part time on the domaining thing.

The whole pack of cards is going to tumble soon anyway, the effectively infinite and constant introduction of new gLTDs will destroy domaining. That's only a bad thing for domainers, probably a good thing for internet business in general.

Best of luck.

Before you bolt from the scene here, perhaps you'd give us an update about the AD situation. Have you learned more about the dangling, unresolved issues brought forth in the separate thread here? Give us your opinion of what the future holds for AD. Civil litigation? Law enforcement intervention? Were you bombarded with threats and sabre-rattling? Is that episode totally behind you?

Hey RJ,

I will definitely be around and will likely post in that discussion board. I'm interested in taking my business in a different direction, not abandoning the forum!

Psht... I'm keeping my avatar.

Thanks, James. I completely agree!

I partially agree. I see things changing dramatically in the near future!

Thanks for the best wishes.

There is no update. He's out of the industry whether he knows it or not and his only friends are scumbags. Most people stopped contacting me after AD started "resolving" issues. I'd imagine there was a don't talk to Shane clause in there somewhere. I personally think AD will be back to business because he has some ignorant ass followers and the vast majority have short attention spans. I was not bombarded with threats but he called me on multiple occasions. I think he thought that I was looking for a payday. He insinuated that he'd "help me out." The episode is kind of part of me at this point. It's one of the reasons many people know me (for better and for worse) and I would do it again without hesitation.

Well, thanks for doing it. What a scene. I wonder if Ron Jackson still kisses his ass.

Anyway, like I said, thanks again.

A goodbye thread usually implies the OP is leaving the forum. It seems that OP was just attention seeking and is in fact not leaving but just changing direction of this business.

If you are leaving OP, take care mate, if you are not, close this thread and man up.

:xf.rolleyes:

If you've taken the time to read even the original post you'd realize I said two things

1.) I'm stepping away from the industry
2.) I'm selling off my domains

Neither of which implies that I will immediately stop using the forum.

Thanks though, prick.

What are your predictions?

Honestly, I can't even venture a guess. I've just noticed it's become more difficult to sell domains. I think this trend will continue until the dust settles from this chip craze.

All the best for your future projects,Shane.

Thanks!

This entire thread thinks your leaving the forum. Even RJ implies it. Are you saying we are all dimwits?

Clearly I'm not the only here that misinterpreted your "goodbye".

Anyway this is your goodbye thread. Soak it up.

I made the keyword bold, red, and italics then underlined it.

Hope that clears things up.
