After 3 years, I think it might finally be time to take a step back from the domain industry. I will be liquidating most of my portfolio in the coming weeks. I would be willing to make myself available for some individual consultations but I will largely be focusing on other projects.

There are 2 things that I think are worth emphasizing before I go:
  1. This industry needs to change. There are too many leaches. Everyone is trying to sell something that you don't need. Realize that free isn't free and most paid products are not needed. Some tools are worth the subscription fee but most domainer to domainer services and products are crap.
  2. There are too many domain "gods." Sure, they have made some money but look deep enough and you'll quickly learn that most know only a little more than you. They are just good at gift wrapping crap. Stop following and start leading.

So if you want a free piece of advice or would like to know about my hopes, dreams, and aspirations... post below. I'm an open book.

Otherwise, it's been fun.

Best wishes to you on your new endeavors. You have made very solid contributions to this forum and to the domain industry. It is possible to agree or disagree with you, but in my opinion, you inspire respect.

As others have said, I hope this is not full retirement.

Hi,

Everyone has 24 hours in a day. Nobody get even 1 second extra.

Shane Bellone, Ali Zandi, Obama, Trump, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, You , Me , all other in the world has 24 hours in a day. It is how we utilize those 24 hours. We all are learning. I am not an expert of anything. I am also a learner.

I can completely understand why you may be leaving. This may be going to be the best decision you have ever made in your life. People change their path when they do not have choice and that may be our of fear which can be considered 50-50 decision. But when you are making good money and still you chose to go on different path then your decision will be considered as right decision because you have choice and your choice is not because you have nothing else to do.

Please forgive my poor grammar. I hope you understand what I try to say.

You are choosing better path not out of fear.

You will be a good entrepreneur for sure. I have no doubt about it. Keep in touch.

Best Of Luck & May your Hard/Smart Work will pay off sooner than later.

Thanks

Well..didn't get to know you..although I did read your Dicker thread extensively--a good heads up for anyone who was paying attention.

I wish you well. I like the fact that you have self-confidence...it's in short supply (and not to be confused with egotistical, lol).

"
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand."

P.S. If the God part offends...just ignore or substitute for whatever you like.

You've made Namepros more interesting than it already is.

I feel the same with college and going towards my career. I still use domaining as a fun hobby.

Good luck on your journey towards your masters, Shane!

Thanks! I'm looking forward to continue my education.

Well if you Shane leaves , I have to leave too, and many others need to go too.
I have learned a lot in the past year about domaining , I don't follow anyone and after analyzing those "gods" , I found that most of them are "good talkers" , they only know how to sell "crap". I know many "newbies" here that are geniuses , but they're not making money just because their English is not that good and they have problems communicating with clients.
I have only believed on you , after reading your flippa and Adam thread , I had always doubts about that , especially after reading some of those "top" flippa sellers ebooks which cover nothing , and I found them just overpriced and waste of time. So as I have said , from the way you express yourself , I find it interesting to follow you , and learn from you , I wasn't hoping to get from you ways to find domains or buyers or to make sales , but ways to express , ways to fight in this industry which is full of lies. And now , since you're leaving , many "scammers" will be happy that you won't be exposing their tricks anymore , and most of the newbies (I prefer to call them new to the industry) will be stuck in those "top" seller's schemes.
I can't stop you from retiring , but I will ask you to keep your eyes at least on the industry and to keep posting on the forum , also I encourage you to start your consultation, many will be happy to pay for your services , and this will be good for everyone as you won't be leaving the domain industry in some way.

As others have noted, there will always be shady people but I believe more people than ever will stand up and say something. If you need me just shoot me a message. I'm around. :)

Good luck Shane...Hope you succeed in your future goals..Never give up and keep living life to the fullest.
Remember your always welcome back home here at the

If I had 25 hours in my day... I'd be stupid wealthy. :D

Thanks for your kind words.

I am not easily offended. ;)

Thanks to you too.

I'll have to pass on the love to the newcomers. Everyone has been so kind today.

I still can't believe the news. Somehow I instinctively knew something was up when I messaged him last night. I will post more of my thoughts on your retirement after the Golden State game. For now, all I can say is @Shane Bellone has inspired me to be a better domainer. He's influenced me to stand up for what is right, despite what negativity it may bring upon me. Fortunately, nobody has attacked my character via hate site as was done to him. Karma has a way of making these things right in the long run.

I will truly miss his presence in the community. I'm just glad I have his contact info so I can still rely on him for both personal and professional advice.

(PS) Thank you again for treating @Beezy and I to that wonderful meal at NamesCon!

I wish you all the best buddy with your new adventures :)

It's worth domaining as a side hobby keeping a handful of domains in your portfolio? It's a very nice side earner if you have no urgency to sell?

I probably need to take my own advice lol...

A great quote below: IMO

It was nice seeing you here in the community. I may eventually leave the industry after I finish my Bachelor's Degree as well. Currently planning my own product line and I am doing a little bit of stock trading on the side. Entrepreneur at heart is eternal.

Hey Shane,
I really enjoyed your posts over the past year or so, however, what I appreciated the most was how you spoke truth-to-power…those were “Boss” moves.
I wish you well.

I don't see what's so difficult to understand from the OP's position, he's done well short term but prefers to go a different path that leads to a more sustainable career in whatever he ends up going into long term. Frankly the lack of professionalism from some people in this space is sad. I used to work in financial advice and I can guarantee you some people here wouldn't last 5 minutes outside of domaining.

Anyway the OP's decision is pretty smart and sensible if you ask me. Apart from those people old enough and with the foresight to get into domains early and make a packet, % wise very very few make it in domaining long term especially those entering now.

Competition is fierce and getting harder the whole time, those that played the chinese market in the last 6 months only are in big trouble and even if not then you have the new GTLD's coming out the whole time which risks in the long run causing confusion and diluting anything other than ultra premium .coms. Maybe extra regulations will come out one day that makes domaining harder like has been going on in China, who knows etc. etc.

Ultimately I don't see it as a traditional career as such, how many people start out saying from early on this is what I want to do for a living with at some stage possibly a wife/partner and children to support and needing to bring in a regular paycheck? I would think in % next to no one.

Make a success of whatever you do Shane, i'm sure you will!
