After 3 years, I think it might finally be time to take a step back from the domain industry. I will be liquidating most of my portfolio in the coming weeks. I would be willing to make myself available for some individual consultations but I will largely be focusing on other projects.

There are 2 things that I think are worth emphasizing before I go:
  1. This industry needs to change. There are too many leaches. Everyone is trying to sell something that you don't need. Realize that free isn't free and most paid products are not needed. Some tools are worth the subscription fee but most domainer to domainer services and products are crap.
  2. There are too many domain "gods." Sure, they have made some money but look deep enough and you'll quickly learn that most know only a little more than you. They are just good at gift wrapping crap. Stop following and start leading.

So if you want a free piece of advice or would like to know about my hopes, dreams, and aspirations... post below. I'm an open book.

Otherwise, it's been fun.

I've never heard of someone who's good at domaining quit domaining. My bet is that you'll be back at domaining in 2 - 3 years or less! :-D

No one quits domaining....even the people who suck at it keep domaining unfortunately! You have to honestly HATE domaining in order to quit, but if you were good at it, that means you enjoyed it...and I'd find it hard to believe that you suddenly hate the industry - long term. You'll eventually realize that every industry has it's perks and come to your senses :-P

The problem is that domaining isn't a forever thing. It's too temporary for me.

Always enjoyed reading your posts.

Good luck with your future endeavors Shane.

Thanks!

It is sad to see you leave. You certainly have made waves and left an impression. The whole Dicker thing would have never come to light if it was not for you.

I wish you the best of success.

This is the rush of domaining. A $xxx purchase could sell for $xxx, xxx. Or you could go bust chasing the dream. Most of us find a way to get by but the real way to wealth is to build and provide content.

Good luck!

thank you Belone

I had a really good laugh

There's more to life and it's sad if you don't realize that at your age.

Thanks, man. I totally agree.

We haven't really spoken much but I wish you the best of Luck. I myself left the industry back in 2010 for 3 years the simple reason was because I was loosing money all over the place on domains and other online investments so went back into the Tech Industry made a killing and came back doing this part time. I would like to borrow a word from Donald Trump and say domaining is "tremendously" tough those who claim is easy are no different from "lying Ted" :) Good Luck with your masters! Take care Mate.

I wish you well and I thank you for some great posts I read by you.

You will soon realize that in every industry you have people selling crap, walk into peoples homes and see how much garbage they purchased, just thw ay things are, you don't have to partake, however, realize its not just this industry.

Domaining can burn you out man... It's happened to me twice. I've come back both times. The last time due to a nice inbound sale that seemingly came out of nowhere. That's very inspiring.

The reality of it is... scavenging through thousands of names daily looking for a handful of worthwhile acquisitions will turn your mind to mush after a while. Not all of us operate like that but I know many do.

It's hard to stay away because there's absolutely no barrier to entry, or re-entry. It just takes a spark of interest and you're right back in.

I wish you luck Shane. I agree that if you want to build something significant, than this profession won't fill that bill unless you develop something within it. There's money to be made but after all, we are trading digital assets that don't even physically exist thanks to DNS. Still can't wrap my head around that sometimes..

I wasn't around here much from 2010 until last summer but it looks like you showed up and helped a lot of folks and managed to kick some ass at the same time. You'll do well...

Some times you just gotta do what the heart wants....
and become Ryan Gosling's body double. Seriously though, good luck in all your future ventures Shane.

You've made Namepros more interesting than it already is.

I feel the same with college and going towards my career. I still use domaining as a fun hobby.

Good luck on your journey towards your masters, Shane!

Well if you Shane leaves , I have to leave too, and many others need to go too.
I have learned a lot in the past year about domaining , I don't follow anyone and after analyzing those "gods" , I found that most of them are "good talkers" , they only know how to sell "crap". I know many "newbies" here that are geniuses , but they're not making money just because their English is not that good and they have problems communicating with clients.
I have only believed on you , after reading your flippa and Adam thread , I had always doubts about that , especially after reading some of those "top" flippa sellers ebooks which cover nothing , and I found them just overpriced and waste of time. So as I have said , from the way you express yourself , I find it interesting to follow you , and learn from you , I wasn't hoping to get from you ways to find domains or buyers or to make sales , but ways to express , ways to fight in this industry which is full of lies. And now , since you're leaving , many "scammers" will be happy that you won't be exposing their tricks anymore , and most of the newbies (I prefer to call them new to the industry) will be stuck in those "top" seller's schemes.
I can't stop you from retiring , but I will ask you to keep your eyes at least on the industry and to keep posting on the forum , also I encourage you to start your consultation, many will be happy to pay for your services , and this will be good for everyone as you won't be leaving the domain industry in some way.
