A domainer I once met in a domain conference, had a huge portfolio of .mobi domain names which he thought had a great potential.
He held the portfolio and denied close to $2.5 or $3 million offer on the .MOBI portfolio that he had. If I am not wrong, I remember him telling that the offer came via one of the auction platforms, like 7-8 years back.

He said, he felt bad rejecting the offer looking backwards. He was so sure of the domains that he owned, that he let go off such life changing offer. However, I am not sure about the number of domain names he owned(actually I don't remember) or the quality. But he sure was a credible domainer and if he said something, it must be true.

However, he concluded the talk by saying that domaining is that kind of business. You win some, you lose some!

The point that I am trying to make here, is that many of us lose out on some of the deals when negotiating. probably because we are expecting more out of the portfolio, which is fair in this business.

Do you recall any such stories where you declined an offer in hope of a better offer and later, the domain either did not sell and you let it expire, or you sold it at the same or a lower price?
Or maybe, you are still holding them.

I got a 12k offer for 3DChannel.com not long after the movie Avatar was realeased and 3D was booming. I rejected the offer from a large Canadian company and then held onto it for years before flipping it on NP for $150 recently. :bigtears::bigtears:

Just 1 or 2 $1 million story. what about millions of other websites ?

I have stopped reading those $1 or $25 million stories.

Sucks to make a poor decision a lot of luck involved at times holding out some will bet on red or black when down to it. I lost more than won holding out. These trends windows open close fast.

Sure, happens all the time. On the other hand, many a time I declined a tempting offer and then sold the domain for significantly more.

It's part of any negotiation I guess, you either take the offer, or hold (20% you get more 80% you get less).

He will probably have to wait a long time if such a chance comes back at all.

    Hi

so, did his first name start with P?

I guess the dream of .mobi taking over .com never came true, huh?

still, the longer you're in the game, trying to get more money out of the sale, from each name
    then...
you too, will pass up on some $ and may look back later, depending on current situation,
to regret not taking the dough-ski then, or wishing you had the duckies now.

but it's better to have turned down an offer, than to never have received one.
because it shows you have domains others desire, rather than domains nobody wants.

    imo….

It's similar to deciding to hold onto your crypto investments with the expectation that their value will skyrocket in the future.

Depends on a couple of factors. I wouldn't call it greed, so much as a failed attempt to maximize return, and a miscalculation of future demand for the names.

I've got a single character ngtld that no one caught. it's 1 letter that matches the first letter of two huge companies in the travel industry. The ngtld is an exact match for their niche.

I'd take a million or two for it.

You have only to be able to wait for the right buyer. If he ever comes, you don't know ...

    Hi
    I agree

you can almost see same scenario, with registrations of some of the new gtlds
the buyers have hope, faith, etc that compels them.

    Hi

to me, it's not stupidity or greed

you have to envision the "sign of the times" then, as .mobi hype was the hypest of all time...so far.
after rick the wiz, aka da domain king, sold flowers.mobi.. the rush was on!
lot of domainers got caught up though, and just waited too long before selling.

as with that, there was a "time period" involved... which coincidentally, is much like crypto
those who got in early and sold at peak, made a killzilling!
while you got others, who may have held past the peak, and might be looking back now with regret.

    stupid or greedy?

but anybody... a persona` or an event, can "move the crowd" in a direction, depending on hype, propaganda and some success stories.
the psychology of wanting to get in on something good, the hook, the bait and all the potential if you bite

if you've been around or if you stick around, you've seen it or soon will
    :)

    imo….

He did say it was a life-changing offer though. How much more money does anyone need if they already have a life-changing amount. Offers like that are so rare that you should grab them with both hands.

Without a paper trail or proof, I don't put any weight into these claims, especially if its a speaker at a talk trying to drive business.

Is he Indian? Then i know him. If he is not there is a same story with a Indian Domainer.

He holds one of the largest ll.co.uk, and some great one word. In names.
