discuss A domainer declined $3 Mn on .mobi in 2012

A domainer I once met in a domain conference, had a huge portfolio of .mobi domain names which he thought had a great potential.
He held the portfolio and denied close to $2.5 or $3 million offer on the .MOBI portfolio that he had. If I am not wrong, I remember him telling that the offer came via one of the auction platforms, like 7-8 years back.

He said, he felt bad rejecting the offer looking backwards. He was so sure of the domains that he owned, that he let go off such life changing offer. However, I am not sure about the number of domain names he owned(actually I don't remember) or the quality. But he sure was a credible domainer and if he said something, it must be true.

However, he concluded the talk by saying that domaining is that kind of business. You win some, you lose some!

The point that I am trying to make here, is that many of us lose out on some of the deals when negotiating. probably because we are expecting more out of the portfolio, which is fair in this business.

Do you recall any such stories where you declined an offer in hope of a better offer and later, the domain either did not sell and you let it expire, or you sold it at the same or a lower price?
Or maybe, you are still holding them.

Without a paper trail or proof, I don't put any weight into these claims, especially if its a speaker at a talk trying to drive business.

Is he Indian? Then i know him. If he is not there is a same story with a Indian Domainer.

He holds one of the largest ll.co.uk, and some great one word. In names.

He should have followed the old advice...

You gotta know when to hold em.
Know when to [sell] em.
Know when to walk away.
Know when to run.

Uh, I'm not greedy. I'll take a half million for everything I own... Ok, you twisted my arm... 1/4 Million and it's all yours!

In fact, part of the goal of this post is to share your own story too and not judge and insult the guy for his decision, we do not really know his situation at that time, it can happen to everyone... ! either the negotiations go well and you win the jackpot, or you lose everything! routine ...

Now, most of readers here will not share their story for sure !

Wow ... read you first before posting.

Just lookslike the perfect humain commenting ... he is stupide okay ! but who are you for him ? and why you will not say that to him face to face ? what if he negociated more than that 3m, what would u say at that moment ? what if the buyer made a low offer first to check seller's response ? many factors enter in play ...

There no feeling here, you are not directly nor indirectly linked to this matter, if you feel bad about this and took it personally just comment respectfully, otherwhise your comment is not required and will give no benefit for anyone.

We have different perception about forum btw.

If you feel also bad about what I said, you don't have to answer to me also, I didn't targeted you neither taken in account your comment, avoid me next time.

No point dwelling on past mistakes. Best to learn from them and move on. Onwards and upwards.

This really puts "knowing when to sell" into a whole new perspective!

When the whole .io phase was kicking off -- I sold my only one word .io in 2016.

Liebe.io for 4$ -- I did not have any faith in the extension.

Turned out the .io extension inflated soon after and then fell again -- but I am still positive I could of gotten a better return for my investment than the 4$ I sold it as.

its called GREED! if someone offers u millions for just words take it! the ops guy was simply an idiot and had no concept of reality. he got what he deserved by being such a greedy git, squat

It's easy to say such things with hindsight. Another way to look at it is that guy put himself in a position to receive such an offer. Have you ever put yourself in such a position?

He must have invested a lot of money and time into a portfolio that had a 3,000,000$ offer on it. Nobody knows what could be said or done in that situation -- until you've been there in that exact moment.

Very good point to make.

he probably bought a lot of premium .mobis to the point where 3 mil purchase isn't worth it if he spent like 2.5 mil or something like that.

he mustve had 4-5 million domains. I mean it must have been something similar like 3 million mobi domains so it wouldve only been $1 a domain. Its just stupid if it was like 100 domains, you know. :)

It happens. I should have went with the first offer.. I was greedy and thought I can still do better. So when you get an offer, really think about it lol

I've missed the boat by not accepting good offers before a fad wanes, but sometimes a new boat gets floated and names can be re-purposed outside of your original vision for them. In that case it can be a blessing that you didn't sell earlier.
I think it's still worth holding for the best price on good .coms as the market will only improve as more people get online.
In 2000 there were 412 million internet users, in 2010 there were 1.97 billion, and in 2020 there were 4.13 billion, and I think that will probably skyrocket with the world-wide lockdowns we are likely to face over the coming months.
Stats mostly from ourworldindata.org/ .
