I have seen it written here befor but I must Repeat it.

1and 1 is the worst company I have dealt with in buying a domain.

I will never buy a name that is registered there again. I would strangly recomend that no one else does either.

I recently purchased a domain name from a fellow Np er and the name is at 1 and1 and called them twice to find out how to transfere ther name.

the first rep had no clue , the secound informed me that the origional owner would have to fill out a form then fax it to them. Then I would have to fill out a form and fax it to them. then I would have to open an account, but could not open an account with that name. I would have to buy another name to get a user name. I lost him after that......................................there were four or five more steps involved.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Live and learn. I also will refuse to buy a domain from someone who has it regged at 1and1 for the same reasons you found out. Their customer service is abysmal and it is darn near impossible to change ownership.

Trust me they aren't even that good. Even the guys from Sedo (a subsiduary) despise them and will say so openly.

I doubt Sedo would ever publicly criticize 1and1. I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if this ever occured. Do you have any examples?

Only comments made in unrecorded phone conversations, but don't forget those guys too have the problem of sorting out transfers.

Did you know that if you transfer a .co.uk the new own gets it but cannot use it unless the Tags at the old registry are cancelled. To do this you have to go a completely different site from where you register you names. In fact I think in total to do everything you need to do you end up going to three separate sites.

Also did you know that if you transfer a domain away from 1&1 they will automatically charge you for renewals year in year out. This is because you have to supply card details and their accounts department doesn't bother to check that what they invoice for they have actually supplied.

If you want you pockets pumped dry, 1&1 are the people to do it for you!

tha fact that 1&1 sux is a fact.
that has nothing to do with the fact that .uk names are handled by snail mail and that their system makes the ancient Egyptians look more advanced at sending mail than their registry... nominet.......
The UK's internet days are dictated by an ancient 'Royal' system of transfers that is a spectacular roayl PITA.

Don't feel too bad, when I first started domaining, I had a similar experience, except it was with APLUS.net instead of 1and1.

Well I bought a domain which was registered at 1&1 a while ago and tranfered it away with no problems... there is hope ;)
Most often you get what you pay for (in terms of service)

Well I was using 1and1 for a short while until I realized they charge $6 or so for an INTERNAL push! Ridiculous. Now I'm using GoDaddy (with the coupon code, or I'd be using Fabulous).

open an account at godaddy.
unlock 20 names at 1+1
transfer list the names at GD for transfer.
after names successfully transferred..get names removed from 1+1 account listing (they will stay listed for future billing if you forget).
after names removed from account repeat process loop.
do NOT wait until last 3 months of registration. 1+1 will slow you down.
do NOT leave names in 1+1 for expiry: they WILL bill you unless you get the names off your account and fax cancellation of account and receive acknowledgement.

re sales on sedo screwed up when 1+1 registration involved: ha ha ha

I have never used 1and1 and never plan to. I find it hard enough transfering domains from a godaddy reseller...

Yes, it looks like godaddy likes to make it difficult for you to transfer away.
For instance I have unlocked a few names I have acquired there to transfer them elsewhere as they are due for renewal soon.
It seems that making the slightest change to the domain like whois or even the registrar lock will prevent the domain from being transfered for 60 days.
So you have no choice but to renew the domain with them and get stuck with them longer.
Abusive practice if you ask me.

1&1 is really bad in customer support also. I sent them a 4 mails on 26, 28 July & 2, 4 August and havent received any response till date. Thats shows they are NO GOOD ....

GD is quite straightforward and easy to transfer from. It is obvious one does not edit the whois if one is considering a transfer to another registrar. 1+1 is a different kettle of fish altogether.

1+1 without a doubt is the worst company in the world. They have the most callous sales and "support" staff ever.

Avoid at all costs.

I've heard some bad things about 1&1 support in many different forums...
I've personally never used it, and I'll keep it that way.

I also intend to keep it that way, They dont even tempt me even though they have offers in every geek magazine Ive ever read

Have never used 1and1, but this kind of across-the-board criticism means that must be a truly wretched company. I'm a big believer that this type of service should lead to bankruptcy and chaining the door. How in the heck are they sustaining themselves?

I wouldnt ever advise doing business with them. A couple of years ago they renewed my names against my wanting to and asking not to THEN charged me again to transfer them out.

And now they're attempting an unsolicited transfer against one of my domains (not one that I used to have with them 2 years ago or so). And no matter how many times I ask them to stop, they continue to "notify" me that a name is to be transferred to someone else "courtesy" of 1&1. Uh, right.

Brute force methods of operating just dont work. Horrible company. :!:

1 and 1 might have lackluster support, but I transferred several domains from them without a problem. I just called them asked them for the info I needed and the domains transferred like any normal cheap hard to work with registrar. Today surprisingly I got a bill for a domain I thought I let expire, and the funny thing is I'm happy they renewed it for me. They even did it at a super competitive price of $5.99. I can honestly say they are time consuming to work with, but I'm very happy they automatically renewed a domain I forgot about for 2 years. Of course I'll transfer it out soon, but the auto-renewal made me happy.

Well, that's great if you were smart enough to only reg one or less :hehe: names with them. I unfortunately regged 200+ and I am NOT happy they decided to renew instead of promptly processs my transfers.

Here is a whiff of 1&1 Internet Services stink:

Even still, you only allowed five days.
I suppose a transfer of registrar in 5 days is possible.
...yeah, it's possible, Einstein...such as with every other registrar I've dealt with to date.

We feel as though we've shown a lot of patience and understanding
with your account.
Here is my story. You decide who has been more patient...
1and1.com HATER...ACK!!!!

Here is a 1&1 lesson for you. If you register a name with them it is really only for 11 months and not a full year. You'll need a full month to deal with all the bullshit that 1and1.com puts out there. So, ($5.99/11) * 12 = $6.53. Alternative: use GD with a coupon or bulk reg at fabulous for $6.75 or just pay full price.

If I stopped you from using 1and1.com, PLEASE let me know. I would love to know that I am making a difference, however slight. :)
