I am creating a thread for the purpose of warning internet users about 1and1.com

This by far is the worst company I have ever dealt with. I signed up for hosting accounts but kept on getting them wrong because I am not too much of a computer literate (that is for my programmer). Somehow I got signed up for 6 different accounts that continued to bill me AFTER they had been canceled. I called 1&1 and after complaining and threatening they finally removed all but 1. Well I had still 90 days to cancel and I did within that time. So now I have a canceled account and a recurring billing cycle. OVER and OVER again until according to their TOC it will magically renew itself upon my inaction.

So I delved a bit into their Terms and voila a 90 day money back guarantee. Am I saved? Nope because beneath the fine print in something called misc terms are terms contradicting all their guarantees.

BUYER BEWARE YOU ARE IN FOR A SCAM

STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS

Any more horror stories I know they are out there. There are tons of anti 1&1 threads

I think almost all companies will have at least 2% of customers that are unhappy. The key is to avoid the companies that have 98% of their customers unhappy! :D

Collections? Wow. I haven't heard that term in a while. Did you really owe them money, and how much?

I had two domains which I didn't realize were on automatic renewal. The credit card they charged declined. I ignored their pay us now emails assuming the domains would drop, and a few months later got a letter from a collections agency. I responded within the 30 time frame to the effect it was not a legitimate debt and didn't hear from them again. I haven't pulled a detailed credit report since then to see if they reported it.

It is strange why did not you get any notification from your domain name registrar and from payment gateway.
Are those domain names lost for you now?

They sent me to collections as well and I had no idea until collections tried to collect. They actually had my credit card and had charged it a week or two prior so why I was sent to collections is still a mystery to me......and the collection agency as well.


UPDATE...if you are dissatisfied with 1and1 TURN THEM INTO THE Better Business Bureau. They got me out of both of my contracts and a refund of some of my money. Too bad this is the route 1and1 had to take. Also if you would like to check to see what percentage of people are dissatisfied with them just check out their BBB rating. It sure does speak volumes about their reputation.

If you were charged and you did not want to, don't you want to issue chargeback?

1and1.com, 1and1.co.uk are the worst registrar and hosting company on the world wide web, they ripped off my client for 3 years, they charged her for hosting and email for domains she never used to host. Not to mention, they have the worst customer service.

As soon as I found out about it, I informed her to move away from 1and1.com / 1and1.co.uk - she thought the lease cost $$$ per year to own several reg fee domains, 1and1.com continued to charge her for years before she realized with my help she was being ripped off!

I did take the time to read them which btw they are scattered everywhere you have to pick and choose the TOS you think apply to you.

Just because a company words its TOS in legally beneficial manner to them and not you doesn't mean that it's ethical and a good company. This firm doesn't even practice simple business ethics. Their terms are written to confuse and take advantage of the average consumer and as you can see by their rating with the BBB and how they handle cases just because its written in TOS and someone agreed to it doesn't mean it is set in stone.

They do what they claim as a registrar. you have to goto www.cancel.1and1.com and cancel. Seems fair enough. There control panel was terrible but actually is much better in the last couple of years. They just add a-record changed. Host looks like it sucks.

They lure you in with their cheap prices and then get their money back through bad business and customer service.

You might notice that many good domains are pickup by accidental drops.

Many people that have a few really good domains will renew them for 5 years. If your name drops, then most people assume that you didn't want the name.

I lost a few domain with go-mamma or somesort go-something because there was a problem with my credit card, i was in Nepal and even though i had a north american credit card they would not accept my IP from Nepal, even though i was already a customer!
Credit cards can get cancelled for no reason, so i like 1and1 for keeping my business. If i'm out the country or not following my statements i might lose a domain. You might notice that many good domains are pickup by accidental drops.

PS there no way i going to godaddy to pay 4 more for each renewal. I'll go with how every is cheapest and offer reasonable service, because my domain bill is too high!

Not in all instances...sometimes you do get what you pay for. I know that 1&1 in the past has actually taken losses by selling hosting so cheap merely to drive out the competition.
