I wanted them to expire.
They sent me to collections as well and I had no idea until collections tried to collect. They actually had my credit card and had charged it a week or two prior so why I was sent to collections is still a mystery to me......and the collection agency as well.
UPDATE...if you are dissatisfied with 1and1 TURN THEM INTO THE Better Business Bureau. They got me out of both of my contracts and a refund of some of my money. Too bad this is the route 1and1 had to take. Also if you would like to check to see what percentage of people are dissatisfied with them just check out their BBB rating. It sure does speak volumes about their reputation.
If you were charged and you did not want to, don't you want to issue chargeback?
1and1.com, 1and1.co.uk are the worst registrar and hosting company on the world wide
1and1.com, 1and1.co.uk are the worst registrar and hosting company on the world wide web, they ripped off my client for 3 years, they charged her for hosting and email for domains she never used to host. Not to mention, they have the worst customer service.
As soon as I found out about it, I informed her to move away from 1and1.com / 1and1.co.uk - she thought the lease cost $$$ per year to own several reg fee domains, 1and1.com continued to charge her for years before she realized with my help she was being ripped off!
If people don't read the terms and conditions beforehand and then complain ... Well ...
I did take the time to read them which btw they are scattered everywhere you have to pick and choose the TOS you think apply to you.
Just because a company words its TOS in legally beneficial manner to them and not you doesn't mean that it's ethical and a good company. This firm doesn't even practice simple business ethics. Their terms are written to confuse and take advantage of the average consumer and as you can see by their rating with the BBB and how they handle cases just because its written in TOS and someone agreed to it doesn't mean it is set in stone.
Very well said - a TOS isn't everything
I think that will not solve the problem now. In any case better to change web host asap and be patient.
I've used them for year for domains. I think they are one of the cheapest. I was surprised that godaddy even tells they 7.11 and that godaddy charges like 10.56. They do what they claim as a registrar. you have to goto www.cancel.1and1.com and cancel. Seems fair enough. There control panel was terrible but actually is much better in the last couple of years. They just add a-record changed. Host looks like it sucks.
The strange thing: he is being the customer of them and does not know about that URL. Don't you think so?
They lure you in with their cheap prices and then get their money back through bad business and customer service.
Many people that have a few really good domains will renew them for 5 years. If your name drops, then most people assume that you didn't want the name.
Just because they are cheap doesn't mean you should trust them
Do you want to say that web hosting company which provides cheap web hosting solutions should be considered as bad web hosting provider?
Not in all instances...sometimes you do get what you pay for. I know that 1&1 in the past has actually taken losses by selling hosting so cheap merely to drive out the competition.
This practice is illegal - I am sure that they were just running sales promotions of some sort
When they went for the US market, they had a big promotion where they gave 3 years of free shared hosting to new customers. I think they did it in order to promote word of mouth advertising, and indeed it worked. Besides, they had an empty data center at their disposal, which would have taken them years to fill anyway.
I think they will give a space for other companies as well to earn at least something.
I don't disagree I was first attracted to them because of their on the surface deals. It was the shady TOS in which you unknowingly enter upon by accepting their offers and their complete lack of customer care when people bring up legitimate issues. My hell came after I wanted to get out from underneath them and it took the BBB to get them to stop charging me erroneously.
In any case you have used them for some time and you did get better price. Now it is time to move. I think that is normal.
My long time was only due to them threatening me with a supposed contract I entered into erroneously.
THEY ASKED 10 DAYS to register my domain, XD you can imagine howz their service is. XD
here's the mail which I got from 1and1 custom support,
Thank you for contacting us.
The reason why you can not login to your 1&1 control panel is because we
are still processing the purchase of your account here in our end. Since
you are worldwide customer, the purchase process will be finished
approximately 10 days from the day you initiated the purchase of your
account. Thank you for your patience on this concern.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
10 Days, WTF
Funny, that's the only company I ever had issues with myself. I only had a couple of domains registered with them, which I did not want to renew. I was unable to convince them that I canceled, however. Now I'm getting calls several times per week from a collection agency, even after telling them I canceled. It's only $20 or so, but still, it's annoying. I hate companies that don't want to let you quit their services, lol.
Just in case you guys don't know 1&1 & Sedo are owned by the same company.
United Internet AG - Marken
Anyways you must have learned the lesson.
