This whole Snopes factcheck.org and facts-r-us mentality reflects a massive dumbing down of the population. Nothing annoys me more than someone who thinks they have checked the facts because they visited some website that told them what the "facts" are.
Used to be people would fact check by taking the time to do real research. Most people didn't have that time. Now millions are convinced that the facts are there at the click of a mouse, and no further effort or thought is needed. Argument over. Fact-r-us.com said so. If Snopes said that jumping off a cliff was a good idea, they would jump off a cliff.
50 years ago, most people believed they were getting facts from TV news or Walter Cronkite. Now, anyone with a website can be a "fact guru." When somebody quotes a website as an absolute authority on any issue of complexity, I just shake my head. They must be completely unaware of factors such as interpretation, financing, personal and political interests, etc.
