Virtual, Alternate, Cinematic, Cyber, Augmented, Hyper, Mixed and now Merged
None of them mean much for domains until it grabs the attention of consumer search habits.
Some will and some will for only a short time.
Probably never will see the end of new formats..
Do you really care what tech your TV has in it if you enjoy it (plasma,LCD,LED)
You still call it a TV.
If you were still holding names for a Plasma TV from 5 years ago, where would you be with it.
It did not matter that at the time it was a better tech. Same goes for VHS/Beta and then VCR's disappeared all together. CD's and DVD's are about to disappear. How long will 4K TV last ?
Hardware names & formats are a limited commodity and self dated to it.
Everyone seems to assume that something else even better is not around the corner.
The overwhelming majority of what I Invest in now is the Software Experience names that do not care about the format of the tech. They will have a longer shelf life for me and the end-user.
Not showing examples, except for this...
Holo names I mostly overlooked in the beginning (5 years ago for me and VR) with exception of a few very good ones, become a larger part of it because they are not format specific. Many newb's can't see that because they associate HOLO only with HoloLens type AR tech. Not a mistake I made reg'ing and that is not the only non format specific name.
And if these cross-format platforms develop well, all of it matters a whole lot less.
Minecraft will likely be the first BIG example of that.
If you lock yourself into a specific format for the 'majority' of your names, you have limited the number of buyers to it and perhaps dated to it. Don't think that 'larger' end-users are not also privy to that fact.
It's not to say there will not be a demand and value for many of them, just more limited.
I'm quite certain all will have some plays. Be careful how deep you go into any one of them.
As long as you understand that going in the better you will make decisions about it.
I know some think one format will beat out all other formats but even if that were so, for how long ?
You are witnessing a fast paced never ending evolution from the beginning.
Even 5 years from now, you probably will not recognize this market as to what it looks like now and I don't intend to hold format specific names (outside of keyword VR) more than 2-3 more years.
Many AR names I have had for 5 years. Pick fruit when it's ripe or wait for it to rot.
.........Just fruit for thought.........
