does somebody know
how the ICANN terms
allow an out opt of the 60 day lock period
when I transfer my own domains to another registrar?

That interesting. I guess different people have different experiences. I've been reselling domains off and on since about 2005/2006 and I have never had a buyer have a problem with a push instead of a transfer.

I have a push-only policy. I don't believe in getting involved in transfers. The less hands in the mix, the better.

But would consider a transfer IF the sale was over a certain amount and it meant losing a sale if I did not engage in the transfer.

To me, it makes no sense why someone would care if it was a push or a transfer.

The main reason is because end-users don't want to have to deal with any registrar they are not already comfortable with. It makes perfect sense. As a domainer, I refuse to accept any pushes to my GoDaddy Account. If the domain is not transferable. I don't want it. There are plenty more domains to choose to spend my valuable money on. I personally think you are being too harsh if you expect the buyer to accept a push to your registrar. IMHO.

ICANN just accepts such locks, but they are not mandatory.
To lock or not to lock - fully depends on Registry and Registrar.

Admittedly, I have only had roughly 10 end-user sales in the 800 or so sales I have had since 2005/2006. I guess I never dealt with an end-user who felt he could find another/a better domain to suit his needs?

I'm sure in the future I will come across such a buyer and may go ahead and engage in the transfer.

But, for now, I push for the push :xf.grin:

Your registrar may deny...

May and Must are different words.

OK. Gotcha :) So we have Donuts and 1and1 which allow you to transfer before 60 days on a new domain. But the buyer won't get another year added at the receiving end. But then I'd forgo that to not have to deal with 1and1 AT ALL :)

Already answered 100 times.
Registry and/or Registrar can set this lock.

The same should be for Verisign and Neustar TLDs, they don't lock their TLDs.

Since around 95% of the world deals in .com, I think it not really practical to talk about Donuts and other TLDs. So we have 1and1 as the only .com registrar which allows transfers within the first 60 days. Is that correct?

The gaining registrar doesn't matter de jure.
But de facto some registrars can't even initiate the transfer if age is below 60 days (@Dynadot and @namesilo as examples).
They still don't understand the modern transfer process.
This problem is even more important.

There are plenty of technical barriers. Like domains not resolving within the 1st 5 days (sometimes more). Like the hosting contract you are obliged to accept with every domain. like the draconian measures they use to enforce the hosting contract, even when the domain is sold. Like their awful Control Panel. Like their response times. There is nothing to like about 1and1, IMHO. I can say the only positive thing is they allow you to transfer out after 1 day. But this is still not any kind of compensation for all the aggravation they give you.

Hosting contracts are not needed at all, why you order them???
There is a plain domain contract at 1and1.

And response time is within 15 min - few hours.

For you maybe. But that was definitely not my experience in the past. Once bitten, twice shy. Is my motto.

This thread is not about 1and1, you may use what you want.
My experience with 1and1 is almost 10 years... mid X,XXX domains were regged and transferred (in and out).

I'm happy for you. You were the one mentioning technical barriers. So i mentioned some of the technical barriers I found when using 1and1.

Tech barriers = 60 Days Lock by Registry and/or Registrar.
No such locks by Verisign and 1and1. The domains are fully transferrable.
