I have never felt this stupid and insulted in my life.
I hand registered a domain 10 November 2017 parked it with bodis.com and decided to watch traffic. The domain is a city.tld (name removed) and after noticing the traffic from America I decided to do outbound 2 weeks ago, contacted end users I feel would benefit from this domain.
In less than an hour one of them replied asking for the price and so I made some enquiries with some np members: @Jurgen Wolf, @jide ofor asking for the best price so I don't call a silly price as I usually do and miss the sale. After consultation I replied the young man with a HIGH $××× bit left room for negotiation. He replied back in less than 10 min that he was thinking of $500 which would have been fine by me. However I didn't want to accept immediately so I told him we'do come down by $200 since it wasn't in his budget and I contacted him but he didn't reply.

Gave him 3 days break and contacted him again that I've not heard from him that if he was still interested we will consider his offer and he should decide which payment plan is fine by him: PayPal, escrow or payoneer escrow... no reply.

I had a feeling he stopped replying possibly because he realised I was contacting him from Nigeria. I even sent a mail telling him I'd transfer the domain to him first if he wants then he pays after he receives it but he'd have to open a name.com account..... no reply... So I stopped felt maybe week days wasn't his thing..

At the weekend again I contacted him asking what his concern was that if he changes his mind I'd list the domain on afternic.com & Godaddy explaining that it is a domain market place.... voila!!! He replied that godaddy is good however his budget is $100 I countered and he agreed to pay $300 asking for how to proceed with godaddy (this is the saddest part: I tried listing it on godaddy and realised the tld .pro wasn't accepted there so I contacted buyer telling him that he should use afternic as it is a godaddy marketplace even given him how to search for the relationship between afternic and godaddy and so he stopped replying...

I was working extra hours at work and decided to give it one last try and if he didn't reply I would strike him off my list and so I contacted him and he replied saying he scared he would get scammed that he'd prefer I call him if I am legit... immediately I picked up my office line and called him introduced myself that it's been me mailing him all this while and he didn't allow me to finish before he asked that what country code was this and I told him Nigeria and he said "no no no f*** off" and ended the call. I called back and he has barred my number. So I sent him a mail that if he felt scammed already he shouldn't have told me to call and I would respect his decision and so I greeted him farewell......

I was so embarrassed... why did he not say from the on set. Why did he say I should call him? So it's a crime course we are Nigeria? I receive many mails from Americans claiming they are forex agents and crypto *** I choose not to reply... I don't insult or treat them badly. I feel highly disappointed at the way an educated guy would act in such an unruly manner......

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
As long as you remain honest, there is really no need for you to feel insulted, you are not Nigeria, you are you. Just move on, it can't rain all the time right? :xf.wink:
Also I hate to say this but the fact that you missed the sale could be partly attributed to a little sloppiness on your end. Offering him to deal on GD without you first checking that the tld is accepted there is not very professional. As you rightly pointed out, that's the saddest part because I think you might gotten the sale otherwise. In any case, lesson learned, keep your chin up, better luck next time :xf.smile:

You are an honest guy, do not bother about this deal. Just forget it and list your domain name again in some good marketplace. Do not feel sad or insulted, it is because of some Nigerians' fraudulent deals, everyone see a Nigerian with suspected eyes. Only your government should take action against those frauds and hang them in public to serve as a deterrent.

How many times have you contacted him? I think more than you should...

Not good for outbound or any kind of negotiation.

How many times would I have to contact an end user....

You have lowered your asking price to far, which simply created fear of scam in buyer mind. Always stick with a reasonable bin, I don't care where it get sold or not.

No, You contacted him multiple times even when he was not replying right?

Kind of being pushy is not good. You leave yourself a weaker hand against the buyer and the buyer might taught you are a scammer cause you have changed your pricing so fast and dramatically.

Maybe you should have been less flexible on price here. This 'buyer' was some tire kicker anyway.
If you look too eager to make sale, and follow up often, the other party will bargain even harder and possibly think they are being scammed (which is what happened here). Your location doesn't help.
Getting a US phone number is easy, but people will want to know more about you before they send any money. There will be telltale signs, for example if you send your Paypal address it might show your country and the buyer might panic seeing the discrepancy...
What I mean here, you don't want the buyer to think you are trying to hide.

If you are dealing with American buyers, setting up a listing on Godaddy when possible would be a good option.

Exactly.

I don't think you should have an American number or address. You are a domain investor from Nigeria, this is what it is. If they don't believe you let them check the who is info so they can be sure they are dealing with the rightful owner.

If the buyer really wants the name they will buy it.

I think this is the best advice yet (y)
No, seriously! Thank the buyer for his interest and wish him a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year!

Not really. You are likely saying this because you are on namepros. Out there it is scary when they hear NIGERIA, no thanks to the media. I know this because I have lost a lot of sale which happens AFTER they see prove of ownership.

There might be different factors for losing those sales such as price or lack of interest - not a serious buyer..

He is Nigerian and he should be a proud one, it shouldn't have stop him from doing a business... Nigeria is a Country with a high population. Billion dollar market for imports and exports. Those who are doing business with high volumes are making money without faking their nationality.

Changing phone number to a US number is like faking your identity or location.

I'd never use a us line or address as I feel it's dishonest...Imo.... I'd just list names and better still direct them to a market place

Do what you have to do, and don't feel bad about it. Business is business, and as much as people don't like to admit it the face of business is not very diverse.

I've only had to get on the phone once for a deal, and that was years ago. It's always the cheap $xxx deals that want to get on the phone with you because they are 'scared'.

Stop dealing with little fish and you will see better results.

If the phone is a problem, then avoid the phone. Forget about it.

Soar with your strengths that you can control.

Have a professional business eMail address, have a professional eMail signature - use a google voice phone number that points to nowhere, 9 times out of 10 they aren't going to call you and will do business via eMail. You also don't need to have a physical U.S. address. I don't feature a physical address anywhere in any of my communications/

When I reach a prospective buyer it's not about me, it's about them and the domain. If the conversation has become about you, then you need to redirect the conversation and stay on message and close your deal.

Study negotiation/marketing strategy from any one of the top 10 gurus over at YouTube, and close some deals.

You can do it, but you just need the right information and tools.

Another choice for you : Using Uniregistry Landing Page plus Sales services. All offers will be replied by Uniregistry's sales team. But you must pay them 5-10% fees. But honestly, i will do it myself.

So what's your point....
Regarding my post?
The wishing him well part is that it puts an end to this part of it between you and him. Done and over on a good note and nothing negative. In some ways it helps you start with a clean slate if he reaches back to you (which he probably won't, probably wasn't that serious).
As far as the article, I posted more for everyone else to see rather than you. Nigeria does not have the best image, at least here in the US but that article tells a completely different story and it sounds like an up and coming place to be. Sounds like it is just booming beyond belief. I had no clue. I am pretty sure most people have no idea either. Come to think about it, you are already there. You already have the knowledge in domain names to jump on the coat tails of these startups. Sounds to me like you are doing this at the right time and maybe the right place.

This is cool as I thought about it but still unsure the tld we love most here. Some use .com.ng others .ng and some .com

You can't take it personal, his actioons has nothing to do with you specifically.

This is what happens when your country has a reputation for scamming. It's not personal. I would suggest being smart about it and getting a number from a country that has a better reputation.

Use epik marketplace. No c omission fee and buyer will feel safe. That's why I moved all my domains to epik.

Like u set up a listing with bin, Send him the link. Boom, done.

U can still do this for him.

Also confused why he counter with 500, but u willingly went down to 200
