Some things have been bugging me about .mobi . I thought the whole point of .mobi was to have a mobile compliant version of your website. Say I own genericterm.com and someone registers genericterm.mobi . How can I get a .mobi extension to make a mobile compliant version of my site if someone has already jumped on it? Am I out of luck because I didn't even know .mobi existed? Do I have to buy the .mobi extension of my domain name from the person who took it? What if they don't want to sell and develop a site on it? Am I stuck developing my mobile version on mobile.genericterm.com? What if .mobi becomes the default extension that all mobile devices go to, what then of my .com? Do I lose all my traffic to whomever regged the .mobi extension of my site?

Hence the reason they had a sunrise period for tm names.

Yes, but what if I don't have a TM on my domain name? What if I just run a really popular .com and had no idea that a new mobile extension was out? Not every website owner knows about .mobi. It wasn't like every .com owner was notified.

i agree with you this would suck.if your site is big enough send a cease and desist letter.

Is that what it would have to come down to? I can only imagine all the legal fees, expecially if you're dealing with an exceptionally stubborn person.

i don't think that would work without having a TM. I would just try to purchase the name from the person, unless they ask for some ridiculous price for it (like some of the .mobi owners here have been doing)

they will just have to use mobi.domain.com instead! ;)
until they save their pocket money to get domain.mobi! imo

What if the person refuses to sell or, as you pointed out, they want an exorbitant amount of money?

As much as I think .mobi is a good idea for mobile devices, I'd hate to see all the C & D letters and legal battles that many will have to go through to get the .mobi extension of their domain. This is going to get even worse if (big IF) mobile devices were to default to the .mobi extension.

That kinda makes .mobi obsolete now, doesn't it?

why do people have to argue about the practicality of .mobi why dont you just sit back and see what happens, are the people that bash .mobi trying to save the .mobi speculators money? are they looking out for our best interest? i highly doubt it.

didnt your parents ever tell you that if you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all?

I wish nothing but the best of luck to anybody in this buisness no matter what ext. they are investing in.

Cant we all just get along? : )

Not when there will be lots of developed .mobi sites no! :)
The only way that people will definately know that their mobi.domain.com site works is by advertising it!
Whats better, domain.uk.com, domain.usa.com, mobi.domain.com, or domain.mobi & domain.com? if u see what im getting at!

Umm... why are you getting all huffy? No one is bashing or arguing here. I want to buy more .mobis, but these questions popped into my head. I don't want to throw away good money on something that has so many unanswered questions.

if you waited for all the answers you would be potentially be buying domains at 10-20 times of what you can buy them for now. if you had a chance to by microsoft at the ipo but you wanted to wait and see if all of the questions were answered as to the pc's influence on the world, you would be buying microsoft at thousands of multiples of where you could buy it.

You have to be willing to take a risk if you want the reward IMHO. Let .mTLD work on the model if you want to take a shot, take a shot, the concept is valid it is up to mTLD to execute.

You took me out of context there. I was replying to the guy who told me to use mobi.domain.com instead of domain.mobi . I do see and know that .mobi is better.

Valid points. I remember kicking myself for not getting in on Google's IPO. I just don't want to end up in a big domain war with someone.

They can't do a C&D without a TM on the name. The scenario you describe is precisely one of the many ways that domain investors make money selling domains. It's no different than owning the same name in other extensions.
