Why Estibot is a pile of c***?

I have a domain called mortgage.si, I recently added it to Bido for not much for the keyword it is associated with. Today I have seen mortgage.fm up for 20 times what I listed mine for - the reason it has probably been bought into is it's Estibot appraisal is a massive $101,000!!!! Mine is a mere $970.

Now tell me what the difference is between the two? What, you can use .fm for radio stations? But what has that got to do with mortgages?

.fm domains come from ... wait for it ... the Federated States of Micronesia ... the Federated States of freckin what? Where the hell is that? A group of islands located in the Pacific Ocean! Nice.

These so called appraisal websites make me laugh. Estibot, Valuate, Epik ... all of them are a waste of internet space. Get rid of them all. :loveyou:

Ummm. Mortgage.fm is currently at $100. Are you looking at the Bido price or the actual bid price? That name is not sold.

So to your point about Estibot, it is a reference tool but would never work in fringe ccTLDs due to low sales. As best I can tell, .si has 5 recorded sales. That falls into the who cares category.

At least with .FM, you have the radio hack angle.

At Bido, you have to keep re-running the auctions. There are a few solid buyers but you have to catch them at the right times. I've listed names multiple times and gotten no bids even with $38 bido price only to re list it and get hundreds.

Seriously, "appraisal" is worthless.

auto apraisal = nothing

and if you depend so hard on a automatic tool to set your prices on your domains, i think your doing it wrong...

I think it provides a useful benchmark of the conventional wisdom about your domain's value.

never use Estibot for anything, it really doesn't make any sense

Didn't i read a post somewhere from Federer that he uses an estibot tool to get endusers pertinant to the domains he wants to sell. I had a look at that option but its just under $50 a month from memory so too expensive for me to try, unless of course it is good enough to guarantee sales.

Estibot is much more than an auto-appraisal tool. It provides a lot of other useful tools and valuable information all in one location. The appraisals are one data point among many when valuing a domain. You have to know enough to know when they're off but most of the time they give you an optimal enduser price for your domain. That data point is best used for comparison purposes and not as what you should expect to get for your domain.

I believe if you pay, you get other options which might be useful, I cant comment on that as I have never paid for these extra functions

The free appraisal though, it gives some crazy prices on ridiculous domains and then some really low prices on premium domains?? weird...

You are better off sticking the name up here on NP for free and getting a more accurate appraisals

I didn't mention anything about the bido price of mortgage.fm!

At least 90% of the world knows where Slovenia is, probably less than 1% know where the Federated States of Micronesia is.

Radio angle for mortgages?

Don't get me wrong, I do use these type of tools a lot to see other stats. Think I wrote this last night in frustration! Both of the extensions are not very desirable - but how can one be $100,000 than the other? Could understand if it was the .info, .biz or .org. Anyways, end of my rant on Estibot! :yell:

Paid appraisals are just about the biggest scams in this industry IMO, and free appraisals are "tools" that should be taken with a grain of salt. The only tool, if any, that helps shed some light on a domain's potential is Google Adwords keyword tool, and even that doesn't necessarily determine any guaranteed value.

Recent Sales (keyword or extension) MIGHT show you some ballpark figures, but at the end of the day, it's all about what the buyer is willing to pay for it.

I don't think that any service or anyone can really tell you what a domain is worth, is it simply down to what people are willing to pay and being at the right place at the right time.

Its certainly more accurate than automated appraisals, at least the domainers here have experience in selling to end-users and know roughly what end-users are willing to pay for certain types/niches?

If you don't know the value of your domain then it's worth reg fee. Using an auto-appraiser for your domain is only proof that you don't know the value of your domain. Best to stick with sales charts for your domain category and/or similar named domain. Best (free) domain sales history DB's:

http://www.domaintools.com/buy/sales-history/
http://namebio.com/
http://www.dnsaleprice.com/
http://www.dnjournal.com/archive/domainsales-archive.htm

Asking here or in other domain forums for a human appraisal can help too, but don't be surprised on the result.

Do they?
I'm not seeing much of that around here.

...that's because you have to do a 180 and turn around...you're gazin' in the mirror!

(...sorry, couldn't let that one slip by...B-))
