I asked ChatGPT why a hand-registered domain is not considered creative intellectual property. I learned that I have no copyrights over a domain.

Then I looked up the etymology of the word "domain." It helped me understand why. I am now satisfied with the answer.

Domains are like kingdoms. They are things of conquest and of appeal. If the kingdom lay fallow, it is forgotten. As Mark Zuckerberg said about startups, "it’s not valuable [un]til people start using it."

Now I understand why Mike Mann doesn't deal with new domains. Sure, there could be gold on the bedrock. But you don't patent a mine until you have the land surveyed. Then you still have to dig down to the bedrock. And that's hard believe me. Otherwise, we'd all be doing it.

Even with explosives it's still really fucking hard. You still have to mill, classify, process, flux and smelt it out of all garbage it comes with.

Now I know why he prefers domains on PRODUCING goldmines and why he doesn't bother with piles of glittery dirt.

I can see why he gets frustrated when newbies insist their pyrite is gold.

Miners know that gold doesn't glitter. And it doesn't come easy. It takes years of prospecting, back-breaking labor and the wizardry of an alchemist to turn coal into a diamond.

Great analogy. The part that stands out is this — domains aren’t IP by default, they become valuable when use or demand attaches to them. Until then, they’re just unproven land.
