Whois.sc limiting anonymous queries?

Today I was trying to check a domain on whois.sc
But it shows a security notice and prompts to login to view the results.
Is this a recent change?

I don't think so. I remember i used to do quite a few whois.sc queries through them and that happened. Just log-in ;).

Something has changed. I received the login message for the first time yesterday. Once I logged in, everything worked fine.

That's the last time I use whois.sc then... I don't want an account with them.

When I was signing up for one back when they became DomainTools, I noticed my password in plain text in the URL bar.

I advise caution when creating an account there. That is a solid red flag indicator that the developers are incompetent or they are out to exploit your privacy; sign up for an account at your own risk.

DomainTools.com is a HUGE and reputable site. They run the Aftermarket.com auctions. Also run by http://www.nameintelligence.com/

I have never had a problem with domaintools and have never once received any unsolicited emails/services from them. My account has been with them for about 2 1/2 years now and I have always enjoyed their services.

This is an important point.

Services that display your password in plain text in the URL bar or send your password in plain text through email are probably not secure enough to be using. If you use one password across many sites, you should create a different one for this site and avoid inputting personal information. :imho:

Same here, might it have been something that they have corrected?

Remember RegisterFly? We thought they were reputable too.

Errr, anyway. I'm glad to see that some people consider it a valid point. When I registered it wasn't over HTTPS either.

It looks like their registration page is secured now with HTTPS -- and some are reporting that they don't display the password anymore. But I'm still wary, regardless of whether I use the same or different passwords across sites.

All I'm saying is that they've made pretty major privacy/security blunders in the past -- and being as large as they are apparently, blunders that should never have happened. I work for a small (as in, only a few people) online software company and there's no way we'd let those types of bugs go through. That's not just poor coding; that's a flat-out incompetence in the developers they're hiring. When I coded at age 12 even, I never displayed passwords plain-text in the URL bar (like "... ?user=mholt&password=mypasswordhere123&action=reg ...")

But some credit seems to be due, since apparently they've fixed that. Still don't think I'll register just for WHOIS though.
