Hey.

I have a question regarding the WHOIS fields and ownership of a domain.

I signed up for a US mail forwarding service, which collects my mail and forwards it to me. It comes in handy, because you don't have to give out your personal home address, but I also need it because I travel a lot, and stay abroad for sometimes months in a row, and need my mail forwarded quickly. The address is like this:

My Real First and Last Name
123 Street of Mail Forwarding Company #MyMailBoxID
City of Mail Forwarding Company, State of Mail Forwarding Company ZIP
United States

My question is this: if I use this address as the address of the registrant, admin, and technical contact in the WHOIS fields, will I still lawfully and in the eyes of ICANN own the domain? Or does the mail forwarding company own the domain then, because I'm using their address? Note that my real name is still used and that I'll get my own unique mail box ID.

Any qualified answer is appreciated :)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
.US domains.US domains
I'd say that is perfectly legit provided the email and phone numbers reach you.

:hi:

The Registrant owns the domain.

You can use an external mail box service
for your WhoIs as long as it is valid.

I see :) But do I (and not the mail forwarding company) still count as the registrant in my case?

Who created the account at your Registrar and ordered the domain registration?

If it was you then you are the Registered owner
of the domain aka Registrant.

If it was the mail forwarding company then they are.

If all you did was rent a mail forwarding address that has nothing to do with your domain registration.

By the way, technically you (or anyone else) does not "own" a domain.

We only get to use it.

If you don't pay the renewal fee you'll see just how fast you will lose your "ownership". :D

yes you do, as it shows your name as registrant, the fact that the address is a mail forwarding company doesn't matter.

As long as they can reach you through the info provided, I think it should be ok.

I use a post office box which is really no different. As long as the mail reaches you, it's a valid address.
