Hey,

So where do you go to check a domains availability? Do you do WHOIS or check with a registrar like GoDaddy just by typing the domain in? Or something else?

What about single domains vs lists of domains?

Vote away :) Information will be put to good use ;)

Thanks!

GoDaddyGoDaddy
I use RegisterFly.com

I like their bulk and cctld search options plus you can search upto 500 names at once.

I dont use GoDaddy.com because their system isnt live, in other words they may say a name is taken/available when in fact it isnt.

RegisterFly.com hasnt let me down yet as far as showing true results.

Most major registrars have a decent availability lookup tool. I usually use Godaddy's bulk (500 names) tool. It has been extremely accurate for me.

whois.sc for most one-off lookups.
whois.net for a speedy .com lookup - faster and results are up-to-the-minute.

Dotster's availability checker to check multiple ccTLDs
or Domainsite's for the same reason.
I prefer Dotster's although it is less accurate.

and Domainsite for bulk TLD availability checks.

Becareful.....You can lose a name very easily

I've had this happen to me a couple times before I found out what was going on. I would type in a name to check to see if it was avail., if I didn't buy it right then it could become listed as part of similar domains that other people are looking for. I've found a couple names this way. I've had names in my Shopping Cart and for some reason could buy them at that time. I had to empty my Shopping Cart and start over. I typed the names back into the search and found that they had been purchased. This happened at Godaddy. I don't think it was their fault, but something weird was going on. When I did a Whois search or the person who reg'd the name within seconds of me empting my cart, it was the Registrar for all the .WS domains. I think if you look for a name at certain registrars and don't buy it, then there is a way that they can "TASTE" the domain to see if others are looking for it. It turned out that after a couple days the domains that I lost ended up in my account. I don't know what's going on out there but be very careful where you search for names. I really don't like Network Solutions, but I use them to do my searches. I haven't had anything weird happen yet by doing searches with them, but you never know.
