Every day, thousands of domain names are registered, some are memorable, some are brandable, and others are catchy.

So, what about you? :glasses:What was the very first domain you ever registered, and what lessons did you learn along the way?

Hope your wish comes true, Miver!๐Ÿ˜

But honestly, itโ€™s a bit pity to see it just sitting there collecting digital dust. Hope youโ€™ll bring it back to life with some fresh updates soon!
There is more than laziness behind this choice, mate, and maybe we can open a public debate sooner or later about what the internet is right now, what it could be, what everyone of us would like it to be, and what is certainly not right now.
I've got my vision of what the internet I would like to be and how I would like to be my website, and I'm working on it.
Long story short, every personal blog or website has a [not indifferent] cost in terms of money, web hosting, and domain registration/renewal, and every one of us tends to fix this cost with ads in its place, and the result is websites lacking content and full of ads, which I hate from my deeper soul:
I've got in my mind a different model to monetize my future blog, and I'm working on it.
Hope it will be born before I die :)

SonicSanctuary.com : 1-17-1999

My first reg, and my first site -that still kinda exists today in the 'early archives' of the Wayback Machine -before it publicly opened in Oct. of 2001.
https://web.archive.org/web/20000304071443/http://www.sonicsanctuary.com/

It was quite an active site, being one of the early, if not the first, audio site.
But it was mostly Flash and Real Media streams so just the skeleton remains.

It should be siriga.com which was registered before 2000.
The registrar's name was webgoverment.com such like.
Whoa, look at you! Are you the president of this webgovernment or something? Been in office for over 25 years, right?!:xf.laugh:

This domain cracks me up, man! Was it inspired by tequila? lol.
Youth and beer. :xf.grin:

You know.

Apparently I was into a theme back then because it was followed up by McFuck [dot] com on Thursday, December 30, 1999. Looking through what I registered when is like a time capsule.

The April 1, 1996 April Fool's post on Dwarf's Outpost criminalized the use of domain names:

As of today, it becomes a criminal offence to give out a domain name in order to solicit commerce over the internet, or to use domain names to connect to computers that could have been contacted instead by a perfectly usable IP address.

Waitโ€ฆ you're telling me I've been illegally hyperlinking all these years? Someone call the domain police! lmao!

The first domain I registered, in 1994, is my last name in dot com and I still have it. My daughter was born that year so she got her first name in dot com. But we had fun with domain names back then because they were free.

I don't know if any of you remember Morph's Outpost, a physical magazine for programmers that was published between 1993-1995. At one of their San Francisco parties, I bet the editor I could put a web site up before the magazine did. So I went home, registered dwarf.com and created Dwarf's Outpost, a parody of the magazine. It outlasted the magazine and then after the magazine died I let the domain name drop.

I had an email address on the Disney BBS long before the web showed up (disney.com was registered in 1990). When they shut the BBS down everyone lost their [name]@disney.com email addresses. But then, ironically, I was interviewed to migrate the Disney email server over, and I realized I'd be the one removing my own email address. So instead I registered didney.com and parodied the Disney web site. That one was before the Internet Archive started archiving web pages.

I think the real reason the parody domain names got dropped is because Network Solutions started charging money and they simply didn't get renewed. Whose dumb idea was it to charge money?
Almost as rough as missing my shot at a first-name dot com.๐Ÿ˜‚ Probably the same mastermind behind pop-up ads.

Back in 2004.

The domain was LinuxLord.com.

Got it for some 8.something from Name Cheap or GoDaddy (I don't remember exactly).

Used it for email, but couldn't renew it due to being so busy with my job, and lost it the next year.

It's still held by GoDaddy I think since then.

Is this for a personal project? If so I like it.
Nah, bought it when I was planning to start a business related to this but then everything went sideways ๐Ÿซ .
Currently just want to sell the domain.
Btw you know what price can I fetch for this?

I am sorry, any price I give would be a guess AT BEST. Good luck.

Hey, raspal.

That sounds a pity. Think you might pick that domain back up later?

Glad to meet someone who likes registering Linux-related domains @raspal.
Back to almost 15 years ago, I registered topolinux.com, dropped it after one year or so 'cause short of money, and took it back last year:
It was still lonely, and still waiting for me LOL.
