Every day, thousands of domain names are registered, some are memorable, some are brandable, and others are catchy.

So, what about you? :glasses:What was the very first domain you ever registered, and what lessons did you learn along the way?

I can't remember exactly, but it was either AlexCrocker.net, which is my real name and I still own this OR ClubZebula.com, which is a Minecraft server that I managed from 2012-2016 before shutting it down. I don't own this domain anymore.

Hey everyone, just joined recently โ€“ Iโ€™m new to the domain trading world and still learning the ropes.

My first domain was CowshedCafe.co.uk โ€“ spotted a few real cafรฉs in the UK using that name and thought it might be worth something to someone lol

Iโ€™m really enjoying the learning process so far, if anyone has any tips/guidance or wishes to part on some wisdom (especially around outbound or flipping/leasing) I'm all ears ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Cheers!

I couldn't remember many details so I had a quick look on the way back machine and it seems the domain was registered on and off since the early 2000s.

I remember back then I registered names at UnitedDomains because they were/are a Sedo partner registrar. For some reason I thought Sedo were the main players in domain sales which was probably more true in 2013 than it is now.

Looking at DNS history the name was parked with Sedo for a year between 2013 and 2014 which is about right time wise.

To answer your question though, I would have probably priced it in the hundreds rather than the thousands and I remember paying for a homepage/spotlight listing at Sedo and getting a congratulations your domain has so email a few days later... alas the buyer didn't pay and I was gutted lol. I dropped the name without a sale.

I don't actually remember my first sale but do remember my first 1k sale which was viral.cc probably not too many years after that.
Haha, thanks for the trip down memory lane! ๐Ÿ˜ŠThe Wayback Machine always turns up some interesting domain history.

It was GOT.IT, for my e-marketing company, March 1997.
At the time, the companies I presented my services to were truly impressed by the possibilities, but at the end of my presentation their question was invariably "excuse me, but what the hell is this "internet'?" ๐Ÿ˜€
Back in 1997, the internet was a mystery to most. Itโ€™s incredible to see how far itโ€™s come since then. So cool!๐Ÿค“

stralol.com almost 20 years ago and then dropped because I was broken.
I knew and I learnt again that You never forget your first love and I made it mine again last year.
And it's for sale 'cause, if you love something so hard, you must be so brave to set it free.

Thanks, Bari!
Soโ€ฆ did you grab this domain because youโ€™re a big fan of Rome pasta? And hey, why didn't you stick with the whole food-theme vibe?

Hello Alex,
Real name as your first domain? Iconic move!

Then I gotta ask, did you drop the other one after finally retiring from Minecraft post-2016 block life?๐ŸŽฎ

it has definitely been on quite the journey with you.๐Ÿ’ž Dropping it when you were broke, reclaiming it years later. Sounds like a domain romance novel in the making.

Glad to have you here. we all started somewhere, and sounds like youโ€™re off to a great start with that domain. So... planning to sell this cafรฉ-flavoured beauty, or just letting it simmer for now?

Your first domain is truly impressed us. And letting it expires thatโ€™s one for the domain history books!

That's crazy. How'd you know about them? To my knowledge they didn't even use the google name until like '98 or '99 and yahoo didn't start using their search until 2000 which is when they started to take off.

to google something is to observe something, i went to college anyway. andd i lived in the news and observer newspaper area, so everyone was always googling each other instead of glimpsing or glancing with their looks.. lol also you dont have much money when your in your 20s. Its not like now where teenagers have become millionaires on the internet. It was just starting. $100 was alot in the 90s. Seems like goggle was taken too at the time because i was working in laboratories at the time, cant remember, anyway shows how much i know, i thought .net was going to kick .com's butt. lol.

That's funny. Never heard google used like that.

The story of how google came up with the name in 97 was pretty comical. They wanted it to be googolplex then googol for short which is a term for a super large number. When the grad student went to register the domain, he mistyped it as google and Larry Page loved it more. The rest is history and it became a dictionary word in the mid 2000s.

My very first reg was in Jan 1999... epuppy .com. My second reg was epuppies the next day. Sold them both in 2009. The singular has since sold 3 more times and the plural one more time and both remain listed for sale to this day.

Valuable lesson too... not all domains sell to end users. There is money to be made selling to other investors (of course end users are preferred).
It would help if you stated what you sold them for. Why are 90% of people in forums not capable of stating things in dollar terms? I call these posters timewasters

Some of these answers feel like opening a time capsule! :lookaround:

Anyone else hand-registered their first domain before 2010? Bonus points if you still own it! ๐Ÿ‘€
