I second digifad's post. I use miniBB and vanilla but for different purposes since they have different strengths & weaknesses.

phpBB I believe is one of the best ones out there, only really bad thing is the security.

phpBB, and while I agree with Fewski that it does have some security issues, there are plugins or 'phpBB Hacks' available that fix some of the holes.

SMF Gets my vote, I think it is great software.

Mine goes for phpBB, although I also like SMF.

MyBB or phpBB.
But, if you are serious about the long term prospects and potential of your forum, and you are going to put alot of work into it, I would think about getting a paid forum. vBulletin being a very good one.
