If anybody could shed some light on these two, would help. If you know a better (free) open source forum software let me know..

I'd recommend phpbb based on personal experience. It is the best actually.

Well depends on how much can you customise them. If you have a Coder, both will do almost anything, you can think of.

I've really come to fall in love with SMF. It's free and it has many mods that the other paid scripts like vbulletin have. It's only downside is the footer link that is mandatory.

punbb is good if you don't need all the features of paid software like vbulletin

For a free one, I think MyBB is best, assuming you want a full-featured, secure board.
