I hear MyBB comes out a lot like VB, and they even have a VB theme. There are lots of mods for MyBB as well so I'm thinking of using that one. But SMF is pretty cool too but I don't know if they have as many cool mods.

Anyone's currently using a free forum software which you find pretty cool? What's the best free forum software available? I've tried PhpBB and I didn't like it much. :td:

I use MyBB and love it.

Me and Geronimo use it at nonstopfootball.com, and I use it on my free hosting forum too.

I would go for phpbb, one of the largest community with loads of stuff to download for free, too many mods and templates available for free, phpbb is great unless you dont know or dont have time installing mods

Smf is good but I never saw other than 2-3 templates on smf forums , you know we need bells and whistles too ;)

I just recently settled on SMF over MyBB, although I do like both.

When choosing a free forum, you might want to check to see whether it is supported by Vbulletin's Impex tool. Especially if your forum grows to a point where you decide you want to migrate to VB in the future.

Personally, I love PunBB (punbb.org) and Vanilla (getvanilla.com). Both of them are very, VERY light weight and require you to download plugins/mods, but I really enjoy them since it's not overbloated and it lets you select which features you want. Extending them is also pretty easy, and Vanilla itself has a really appealing interface to me.

MyBB is the best you can get for free. SMF is also nice, but it just doesn't feel right.

I like the new phpbb 3, It has pretty good seo built in.

It's way better than phpbb 2.

I'm using SMF for www.intelbank.com - it's quite customizable, has tons of add ons, that also come for free and there's an abundance of themes available wherever you look. If you're skilled, you can adjust your default CSS file to look unique just as well.

However, for total overview over all Forum software products, try: www.forummatrix.org - it's a free side by side comparison of all the forums you'd like to evaluate. I've found this site to be extremely helpful!

SMF was my choice for CanadianDots.ca
Extremely flexible, lots of add-ons, active support forum and (contrary to previously posted) lots of templates to build upon.

I've used phpBB extensively for about 4 years now (have even made themes and mods for it). I would highly recommend it.
